Twelve pictures, twelve tales of crime and mystery. Written by Murder Squad and their six accomplices, these page turning stories uncover a world of intrigue, suspense and fear. With contributions from celebrated crime writers including Ann Cleeves and Martin Edwards, each tale is inspired by the atmospheric and evocative Pembrokeshire collection of photographer David Wilson. Twelve writers write a story based on a (different) David Wilson black and white photograph; all the photos are from Pembrokeshire and starkly beautiful; all the writers are murder/mystery writers and weave solid and shaded tales. My favourites were:
Jim Kelly's The Man who didn't breathe - a tale of loneliness and revenge, kicking off with the observation about how each creature has a roughly equal number of heartbeats, and the slower you live, the longer you live.
Valerie Laws's Mountains out of Molehills - the blitheness of young men on holiday contrasted with the insular watching & judgement of the locals
Margaret Murphy's Port Lion - one of the shortest in the book, and again a tale of the shifting relationships between young men, contrasted with the telling of a local legend. ( )
