But then the First World War comes to the mountains, and Piotr is drafted into the army. Unwilling, uncomprehending, the bewildered Piotr is forced to fight a war he does not understand - against his national as well as his personal interest. Malgrat aquesta lectura m'ha agradat molt l'he trobat com a molt lineal, no hi ha res que m'hagi impactat. Ens explica la història d'un home corrent analfabet que el criden per anar a la guerra (1a, guerra mundial), el seu desplaçament en tren, la trobada amb els demés allistats i tota la preparació prèvia.
