I knew this was a sequel to The Boy I Loved but it took me quite a while to get the characters' relationship with those of the earlier novel straight in my head--that can happen when you race through a book like I did The Boy I Loved and promptly forget the names of the protagonists once you put it down.

At the heart of Paper Moon is Bobby Harris, a RAF pilot who was badly burnt when shot down in 1944. After war and the death of his grandfather, he's intent on hiding from the world, from his friend Nina who first knew him as a photographer's model, like herself, and reluctant to renew his friendship with Hugh who he was friends with as a boy.

I was reading this book on the train and I had no trouble finishing it during one day--I suspect I once again raced through faster than strictly necessary. ( )

I read this book having read Husband's The Boy I Love - which I believe was her first novel. Although the Boy was good, Paper Moon is better and shows how the author has matured. The writing has a certain under-stated quality that I admire - there are no over-done metaphors or long-winded descriptions, just good, clear, rather dry prose and a very compelling, if rather disturbing plot that had me reading late into the night. I loved this book and read it in a couple of days, couldn't put it down and had to know what was to become of the lovely, tortured Bobby. Bobby Harris and Jane Mason, the main characters, really come alive, but then all the characters do, even the quite minor ones. This is just a great read and covers quite an unusual subject. ( )

As with all of Marion Husband's books, this is a complicated tale with many fabulous characters - a beautifully written page-turner of a book.
Paper Moon is the sequel to The Boy I Love but will be enjoyed without having read that first. ( )
