A mongoose is adopted by an English family living in India, and soon goes to war with the cobras living in the garden. The entire Jungle Book is well worth reading, but this story in particular was a childhood favorite of mine. Rikki is the perfect pet. He is brave, loyal, kind, friendly and generally happy with life. He is able to go inside the house and by strategy and help from others he's able to kill the snake and then venture out to get his mate.
