The Pilgrim Cat tells the story of the Mayflower's journey to the New World from the perspective of a cat and a little girl, Faith Barrett. The cat stumbled onto the boat while chasing a mouse, and ended up bonding with Faith. The story takes us through the struggles the pilgrims faced during the voyage and when they finally arrived. The illustrations were enjoyable, but I don't feel they added anything significant to the story. When they finally reached land, and Faith told the cat that they had to stay on the boat while the men built the houses I was taken by surprise. It never occurred to me that the women still had to stay onboard during the building of the first colony, I didn't think about how women were viewed in society at the time. I supposed I expected they would need the women's help, since they were literally building a colony from nothing. I think this was a cute way to tell the story of the Mayflower, and explains a good amount of the hardships that were experienced during the event. ( )

This book tells about the journey of the pilgrims coming to America on the Mayflower. This book tells the story of the first Thanksgiving in a kid friendly way. Students will enjoy this book to learn more about how children like them survived and what their jobs were. Students will also like to know tha children back then also had pets. The author and illustrator did their research to ensure that the information is accurate for the readers. This book would be great to use when learning about the First Thanksgiving in class. This book tells the story of the pilgrams coming to America on the Mayflower. This story is fun and is perfect to read to an older crowd when they are learning about the first settlers in America. The book is about a cat who ends up on the boat and stays with his friend, Faith, who is passenger the whole time. The both arrive safely. It also tells how the Indians and Pilgrams met. I would read this book to an older crowd because it is pretty long, but has many great points in the book. ( )

Genre ~ Historical Fiction ~ This is a good example of a historical fiction story for elementary age children. The characters are fictional, but there is a lot of historical facts throughout the book leaving readers with information and knew knowledge.

Setting ~ The descriptions are very detailed giving readers a good vision of the setting. We know that the story takes place in the 1620s over the course of fall, winter, and spring. The illustrations help give readers a visual to what they are reading and adds to the descriptions. The setting must be authentic and real because this is a historical fiction story and it does just that.

Media ~ Tempera ( )
