The power of a small town community to help people overcome their problems shines through in this novel. Dorsetville is the name of that small town, situated somewhere in the northeast and populated by people like Father James, who's worries include a housekeeper on a health food bent who is on the verge of quitting. But he faces bigger worries as well--a friend with car troubles, a parishioner facing a difficult pregnancy, another parishioner whose uninsured children will lose their eyesight without an expensive operation, and a young man who recently got out of prison and needs a fresh start. All of these issues are handled with compassion, grace, and a touch of the miraculous. I really enjoyed meeting the picturesque characters and the spiritual wisdom shared among them. It was a pleasure to spend some time in a place so filled with people who would do anything to help one another. If you love Jan Karon you definitely need to read Katherine Valentine's books!
