When a mystery writer cries bloody murder, everyone blames her overactive imagination...

Thriller scribe Sophie Katz is as hard-boiled as a woman who drinks Grande Caramel Brownie Frappuccinos can be. So Sophie knows it's not paranoia or post-divorce, living-alone-again jitters, when she becomes convinced that a crazed reader is sneaking into her apartment to reenact scenes from her books. The police, however, can't tell a good plot from an unmarked grave.

When a filmmaker friend is brutally murdered in the manner of a death scene in one of his movies, Sophie becomes convinced that a copycat killer is on the loose --and that she's the next target. If she doesn't solve the mystery, her own bestseller will spell out her doom. Cursing her grisly imagination (why, oh, why did she have to pick the ax?), Sophie engages in some real-life gumshoe tactics. The man who swoops in to save her in dark alleys is mysterious new love interest Anatoly Darinsky. Of course, if this were fiction, Anatoly would be her prime suspect....

Funny, chick lit, cozy mystery and ultimately not my thing. ( )

I really enjoyed the mystery in this one and the main character is very different from other heroines I’ve read. I also liked the location of San Francisco. For some reason in most books I almost always enjoy the supporting characters in the books way more than the main characters.

The climatic ending with the villain is awesome and I want to tell you more but it would spoil it for every one reading the book. Her friend saves the day not her love interest - I loved this so much.

I had several issues with the main character. Her inner monologues were so bad even the other characters noticed and had to snap her back into the story. There are times were she is an actual bitch and her reactions seems exaggerated for the situation. Besides her close circle every other character in the book was made out to be a horrible person. Sophia and Dina’s relationship with MaryAnn is a little disturbing to me as well.

I will be continuing the series as I am interested in seeing how Sophie deals more with her family and friends.

I read this book for a challenge I was in and although I did enjoy it, I was on the fence with the rating.

Sophie Katz is an author of murder mysteries. She has several devoted friends, Dena the proprietess of a sex shop, MaryAnne a makeup artist and Marcus her hair dresser. As well as her friends we meet her mom and sister Leah. The characters are all very loyal and devoted to one another as well as being a little quirky. I like the way they mesh and work together to solve the mystery.

Sophie is sure that she is the target of a serial killer. Two other people have been murdered in ways that were described in her books. When she starts to feel that someone has been in her apartment as well as having her car vandalized, she calls the police, but they think she is a little crazy. Enter Anatoly, a Russian man who is a contractor. They begin a relationship but never quite make it to the bedroom. When Sophie begins to suspect that Anatoly may be the serial killer, she and her friends hatch a plan to try and catch him and get evidence. It moves quickly after that point to a successful ending. I had figured out the killer about 2/3 of the way in, but was not positive until the end. A good read, but I did lose interest in a few spots, fortunately it picked up and I was able to enjoy the ending. ( )

Surprisingly cute and LOL funny in places. Cozy mysteries aren't usually my thing, but I really enjoyed this one. I'll likely continue the Sophie Katz series. ( )
