This book was a bit brutal, with a killer who was competent and scary, mostly because he was so matter-of-fact about his killing, and felt he had to accomplish his goal no matter what it took, and he justified all his crimes as simply being necessary. But as bad as he was, I'm not sure if he is any worse than the ones who seemed to be fairly normal but still killed to get to their goals. The ending was sad, but probably the best feasible ending, given the circumstances. This is the third book I've read in the Max Rupert series, and the first one where I felt I knew who he was. And even in this one, he wasn't the main character. The Guise of Another by Allen Eskens is the second in a three-part series, yet can easily stand alone. Its main character Alexander Rupert is a police detective who has come under suspicion for involvement in activities involving stealing drug dealer money. He has been assigned to the department's fraud unit where his career languishes as he works to clear his name. His brother, another detective brings him a case that reaches back to some suspicious deaths occurring 20 years ago. The plot twists and turns through one complication after another. Every type of humanity from cheating wife to ruthless murderer to unscrupulous business owner plays a role in the case in one form or another, each adding complications that Alexander patiently unravels as his own case before a Grand Jury looms in the background. Eskens put together a wonderful mystery. There are no loose ends, no improbable coincidences, and no predictable outcomes. It is an easy read, yet its characters are fully developed, the settings are presented vividly but not overwhelmngly, and the story flows from one twist to another, keeping the reader involved and interested. It is a good novel and everything a mystery/suspense novel ought o be. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

A former Medal of Valor winner, Minnesota detective Alexander Rupert is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. So when he's asked to look into the false identity of a car-accident victim named James Putnam, a man who in fact died fifteen years earlier, Rupert sees a potentially big case and an opportunity to regain his respectability. But the investigation puts him in the path of :the Beast," the nom de guerre of Drago Basta, a cunning veteran of the Balkan wars and a sociopath assassin who has been searching for Putnam for years. Putnam had something that Basta still wants. If Rupert's life was in shambles before, it's now also in danger. Threatened by the Beast and suspecting his wife of cheating, Rupert falls for the seductions of the dead man's former girlfriend. As he feels his life spinning out of control, his steadfast brother and fellow police detective Max may be Rupert's last hope. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
