"An explosive, headline-making portrait of Allen Dulles, the man who transformed the CIA into the most powerful and secretive colossus in Washington, from the founder of Salon.com and author of the New York Times bestseller Brothers. America's greatest untold story: the United States' rise to world dominance under the guile of Allen Welsh Dulles, the longest-serving director of the CIA. Drawing on revelatory new materials, including newly discovered U.S. government documents, U.S. and European intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles's wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials, Talbot reveals the underside of one of America's most powerful and influential figures. Dulles's decade as the director of the CIA which he used to further his public and private agendas were dark times in American politics. Calling himself "the secretary of state of unfriendly countries," Dulles saw himself as above the elected law, manipulating and subverting American presidents in the pursuit of his personal interests and those of the wealthy elite he counted as his friends and clients colluding with Nazi-controlled cartels, German war criminals, and Mafiosi in the process. Targeting foreign leaders for assassination and overthrowing nationalist governments not in line with his political aims, Dulles employed those same tactics to further his goals at home, Talbot charges, offering shocking new evidence in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. An expose of American power that is as disturbing as it is timely, The Devil's Chessboard is a provocative and gripping story of the rise of the national security state and the battle for America's soul."--provided by publisher.… (más)

The connection of Alan Dulles to Jack Kennedy’s assassination is thinner than mere attribution to the CIA, but the outline of the less speculative events in the man’s life is adequate.

The first 2/3 are something approaching required reading for anybody who believes that America is, or has always been a force for good in the world. It won't come as a shock that there have always been mercenary interests at the core of American principles, of course, but readers may be surprised how intensely and quickly they came on even before the conclusion of World War II to ensure that Socialism in any form was not allowed to gain so much as a toe-hold anywhere that American interests were able to prevail. That this was so ruthlessly pursued as a course of action, though, the complicity of the various presidents (with the possible exception of Kennedy about which, more, briefly) and at what cost may be a surprise to some.

And the historical details abound and are interesting.

The last third, though, gets conspiracy-theory-y enough about the Kennedy assassination to make one worried about the facts in the rest of the book. It isn't that there isn't a lot of circumstantial evidence, and it is all presented very thoroughly. It is just that it amounts to 8 chapters of circumstantial evidence about the Kennedy assassination, again, and then another chapter about Bobby Kennedy that asks one to accept that Sirhan Sirhan may have been a product of MK Ultra.

The book is still worth reading, mind, if one considers oneself a student of history, and/or realpolitik, though it should be a careful reading, paying close attention to points that have sources, and which are assertions without evidence. The epilogue is aces. ( )

The Devil's Chessboard I found to be an extremely compelling read (listen). The book is long but once it gets going I never even remotely approached losing interest. The author is a gifted writer and the book is exhaustively researched. ALL of the various characters are brought vividly to life.

It presents a very compelling case for who was responsible for JFK's assassination, albeit Talbot was laboring at times to massage things to get the facts to fit his narrative. But overall as I said, he makes a convincing case. I have become quite fascinated with this topic, and I am eager to read other books on the JFK assassination to compare theories.

The audiobook narration by Peter Altschuler is masterful. ( )

Finished The Devils Chessboard: Allen Dulles, The CIA and The Rise of America's Secret Government by David Talbot.

First let me say I enjoyed it and would have given it 4 stars except that in the last few chapters David Talbot in my opinion lost focus and dwelled to deeply into J.F.K. conspiracy theories, this is not about legimacy or lack thereof in his writing about the assassination so much that it distracted from the primary character in Allen Dulles.

Beyond this I found this to be a comprehensive accounting of Allen Dulles, and his time in the intelligence service from World War I through the Kennedy administration and his influence on foreign policy even after removed from the post of CIA Director.

The book also goes in great detail on the early days of the days of the CIA and its evolution from Harry Truman's intent for it to be primarily an intelligence gathering and analysis clearing house to a black ops and regime changing group.

The CIA engaged in the policy of overthrowing of any regime they considered leftist or contrary to the powerful and monied business interests in the U.S. such as U.S. Fruit in Guatemala and the overthrowing of Tge Iranian government and replacing it with the Shah. The assassination of nationalist foreign leaders and the numerous attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro and the ultimate embarrassment culminating in the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion.

In balance a good book on the CIA, and the unhealthy synergy between Allen Dulles and the CIA Long with his brother, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and the story of government unchecked run amok, regardless of its intentions. ( )

Halfway in. I have long wanted to read something in-depth about the Dulles boys and this is finally it. They are simply despicable people and the worst of what they came from. It is very much their doing that we live in much of the horrific mess we live in to this day, the horrific relations we have around the world, and the horrific promises the US have squandered since the 1950s. Definitely every US citizen should read this book, along with "Legacy of Ashes."

Finished it. Much about Kennedy since he's the one that finally kicked Allen out on his ass (apparently to no avail since JFK didn't put him in jail or have him executed or get rid of all his cohorts still in the CIA). Fascinating to realize the powers at the time hated Kennedy so, so much more than anything Obama has experienced. Fascinating.

An absolute must read. ( )
