This book is about how kids can deal with their loved ones being diagnosed with cancer. It explores how different kids deal with this situation and also what they can do to help out. Some of the topics of the paragraphs are "The Day My Family Found Out" and "Picturing Cancer Makes It Less Scary." For some kids, this health issue is very scary and they usually don't know how to take the news. If they or another family member is diagnosed, there are many things that they can do to help out. In the book, two kids wrote a list of things that they can do to help around the house. I thought that this was really interesting because kids can feel like they can't do anything in a situation like this, but this book gives a few ideas that could help them.
Laura Numeroff is known for many different children's books including "If you give a mouse a cookie." I didn't even know that she had books like this and it's really neat that she does. Kids that may have friends or family with cancer can read this book to help them cope with the situation and it may even make them feel a little better. Another thing that I really liked about the book was at the beginning it explains what the Susan G. Komen Foundation is. It is important for us to know that there are organizations like this to help raise money for people with this disease. I know that this book can be a help to so many kids and families that are struggling to cope with a tough disease like this. ( )

“The Hope Tree” is a story collectively written by children, all whose mothers all have cancer. The stories are about their personal experiences with cancer, how they cope with cancer, and how it affected their families. Throughout the pages we are reminded of the positive things these children do to make their mothers happy. For a child to address cancer has to be difficult, but these kids all have an understanding of what each of them are going through. One child actually has a hope tree where he places what he wishes or hopes for on the tree. When thinking of cancer one does not think of it in a cheerful way. Yet, this book shows the brighter side of cancer, it shows that there is hope for their mothers to beat their cancer. The illustrator creates images of animals portraying the children telling the story and their families. ( )

A series of brief essays written by children about how their families cope with their mothers' breast cancer and intended to help open lines of communication. Illustrated using animals as characters. Discusses what some kids have done to understand what's going on such as picturing what cancer is, that you can't catch it, it's not your fault, talking with other people, cheering up their mothers.

Reading this book lets children coping with a mother, or someone they know, diagnosis with cancer. The Hope Tree is a book for families whose mother has cancer. This book would be very good to reccommend to a student with a sick mother. It was written by children from an organization called "kids talk." Kid's Talk is an org. of children whose mothers have cancer. These children write encouragement to others about their experiences and struggles, the advice that they give and the hope that they have. The book includes illustrations of animals to help kids engage and relate to life-like situations. Although some of the passages are sad, they always end with hopeful and helpful tips for getting through cancer.
