This is a general review of the French issue of the complete DVD boxed set of CSI:New York (AKA Les Experts : Manhattan) - Barcode: 3384442262804.

Bugs, glitches and general irritations.

Overall this is obviously a budget boxed set; not just because the presentation case itself only sports a paper cover sheet, in place of a proper strong cardboard box lid; but also none of the media itself is consistent in appearance or design. Some of the discs even appear to have come from an earlier half season set (judging from the inconsistent numbering printed on the discs).
The season 1 jewel case contains: first, discs 01, 02, 03, then 01, 02, 03 again, rather than 04, 05, 06.
The season 2 jewel case shows similar inconsistencies with a complete season set. The first three discs are identified as DVD 01, DVD 02, DVD 03, then there is a change in identification to SEASON 2 DVD 04, SEASON 2 DVD 05, SEASON 2 DVD 06.
The pattern continues throughout the season boxed sets with some appearing as you would expect, while other seasons discs seem jumbled together.
These discs were probably all re-boxed from earlier sets in order to create a less voluminous package better suited for posting via Amazon.fr where they were retailed in this form.
It is also worth noting that the cross-over episodes from other CSIs are not included in the bonus material unlike earlier DVD sets I've owned. So, you will have to buy the other episodes individually to view the other parts of these stories. This makes it not such a complete set.

The next matter is not so much a complaint, but rather an observation, and concerns language options:

There are only two options supported on the discs; French (dubbed), and original English with French subtitles. This is clearly marked and so there are no surprises. However, since the subtitles are not burnt onto the film itself (as an happen with certain video tape to DVD transfers I've come across) it should be a simple matter to switch subtitles 'off' from the player controls themselves. Indeed the options are selectable in this way; but, so far I have only been able do successfully remove them from the first episode of disc one season 1, and then only if selected from the preceding menu screen on my remote just before pressing the 'play all episodes' option on screen. Note: This only works for the first episode titled 'Blink' , and reverts back to French subtitles as soon as the next episode runs. Subtitles can not be switched off in this way for any other episodes selected from the menu, and I have been unable to repeat the process on the other discs. You can select 'switch off subtitles' but it won't have any effect. It seems likely that a fix could be found by loading the disc onto a computer installed with more powerful Software.

One positive feature (for me) is the end credits which have been super-imposed over a montage of cut-scenes from different episodes unlike the original US which plays on a plain background. The French version just feels more alive and I for one think it looks better by far.

You get what you pay for and here you just get the basic package.

I am also giving marks out of ten according to my own enjoyment of the episodes, as I view them. This is in order to work out a final score for the entire series. I will do the same for all of them. I've never been able to decide which series is the best: Vegas, NY, or Miami ? So, this will be the decider.
I may also make personal (notes:...) from time to time for my own reference e.g. book titles mentioned within an episode, guest actors/actresses etc.
