This is the amazing, true story of a member of a secret World War II British commando unit, 3 Troop, 10 Commando.Author Peter Masters, born Peter Arany, was an Austrian Jew who fled from his home in Vienna to England following the Anschluss. Ironically, when war was declared in September 1939, the Peter, along with many other refugees, were rounded up as enemy aliens and placed in a detention camp. Ultimately, the British military authorities found these camps to be an excellent source of recruits with extremely strong anti-Nazi sentiments.3 Troop was utterly unlike any other unit in the British Army. This 70-man unit was composed entirely of Jewish refugees whose first language was German. It was felt that these men could provide invaluable service both as translators attached to other units and as clandestine raiders behind Nazi lines. Because the chances were high that a 3 Troop commando might be captured, an elaborate scheme was implemented to hide their true identities.First was a name change to something typically British; thus Peter Arany became Peter Masters. Then came an entirely new background complete with family origins, schools, and other "proofs" of British citizenship. Finally, and perhaps most difficult for most of the men, they were enrolled in the Church of England. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
