Once the thriving attraction of rural Vermont, the Tower Motel now stands in disrepair, alive only in the memories of Amy, Piper, and Piper's kid sister, Margot. The three played there as girls until the day that their games uncovered something dark and twisted in the motel's past, something that ruined their friendship forever.
Now adult, Piper and Margot have tried to forget what they found that fateful summer, but their lives are upended when Piper receives a panicked midnight call from Margot, with news of a horrific crime for which Amy stands accused. Suddenly, Margot and Piper are forced to relive the time that they found the suitcase that once belonged to Silvie Slater, the aunt that Amy claimed had run away to Hollywood to live out her dream of becoming Hitchcock's next blonde bombshell leading lady. This is my second book by the author. I enjoyed my first endeavor, The Winter People, but I liked this one so much more. The characters were easy to connect with and there were plenty of twists and turns. And it had a good creepy feel like I used to enjoy when I read old Stephen King books back in the 80s and 90s.

The story moves between three time frames and a few different POVs, which made me wonder if I'd be able to stay involved and connect with any of the characters. I was hooked pretty early on and stayed that way.

The narrator is Cassandra Campbell who did The Winter People (and Orange is the New Black, among other things) and I already knew I enjoyed her work. A good reader makes a world of difference.

So I definitely recommend this one! ( )

How do I even begin to describe this book? Told through three different time periods from a few different perspectives, The Night Sisters is about monsters, mares to be exact. Mares, as described in the beginning chapters are people who can take other forms at night.

Brutal murders, people going missing, a creepy hotel, a strange tower, and three best friends and their creepy neighbor who watches their going out and their coming in. It is also about two sisters, of which one suspects the other of being a mare.

This sounds like an odd mishmosh of things, but it worked well. The suspense in this book is pretty great as it always feels like something is going to happen at any minute. I could see too that some might say that it is too slow moving. I read it in bits and pieces, so the pace was just fine for me. I would read a few chapters, put it down for an hour or two, read a few more, etc. By the final day, I wanted to solve the mystery and see what happened in the differing times.

I had not ever read one of her books, but she is completely on my radar thanks to this book. I would up enjoying it more than I thought I would. I would give it 3.5 stars going into 4. It is a slower paced book. I did figure out one part of the mystery fairly quickly, so that may have tainted my read a bit. If you like suspense, it is worth your time. It is one that you have to be in the mood for too. ( )

Between a so-so and a pick. I like the idea behind this one, but it feels a little like McMahon explains the mysteriousness out of the story. Also, Piper and Margot are flat enough characters, I kept forgetting which sister was which. Not entirely sure what the point is of Jason's character at all. Still, it's a satisfyingly eerie story.
