In Avenue of Mysteries, Juan Diego--a fourteen-year-old boy, who was born and grew up in Mexico--has a thirteen-year-old sister. Her name is Lupe, and she thinks she sees what's coming--specifically, her own future and her brother's. Lupe is a mind reader; she doesn't know what everyone is thinking, but she knows what most people are thinking. Un escritor de cincuenta y cuatro años llamado Juan Diego, que cojea, tiene problemas cardíacos, que es de origen mexicano y que ahora reside en Iowa, viaja hacia Filipinas, con escala en Hong Kong. Durante el accidentado viaje, conoce a una madre y a su hija, con las que mantiene relación. En medio de las vicisitudes del viaje va recordando su vida: de padre desconocido y madre prostituta, creció en un inmenso vertedero de basura de las afueras de Oaxaca; gracias a los libros abandonados en el vertedero, algunos ya en llamas, aprende a leer en castellano y en inglés. A pesar de vivir protegido por Rivera, uno de los capos del vertedero, a los doce años sufre un accidente que le destroza el pie. Ese mismo día conoce a un joven hermano jesuita recién llegado a México desde Iowa que quiere unirse a los jesuitas que ya trabajan en un orfanato de Oaxaca. Más adelante, el jesuita se enamorará de una prostituta de la calle y los tres viajarán a Iowa, donde Juan Diego estudiará literatura y se convertirá en escritor.
