A collection of stories that is thrilling and touching, amusing and exciting, uplifting and poignant... The Heist A superstitious bride-to-be pulls her fiancé into a strange quest. The Uraniums A rock & roll concert is forever etched in the minds of the fans who witnessed it. A Forever Home An adult orphan searches for a "forever home." Apfelstrudel A survivor from World War II is on a journey to find one last memory of her mother. This compelling anthology includes stories from New York Times best-selling author Regina Calcaterra, Sherwood Anderson Award winner Kristopher Jansma, and Canadian best-selling author Marissa Stapley, along with 12 others. "A remarkable and diverse collection for all tastes with many styles, approaches and profundities." - Readers' Favorite Book Reviews A portion of the proceeds from this anthology will be donated to the literacy charity Room to Read. Thanks for your support! Interview with the Editor We see some big names in Legacy: Regina Calcaterra, whose memoir Etched in Sand was a New York Times best seller; Kristopher Jansma (The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards), winner of the 2014 Sherwood Anderson Award for Fiction; Jenny Milchman (Cover of Snow), winner of the Mary Higgins Clark Award for best suspense novel of 2013--and that's just to name a few! How did you manage to assemble such a list of talented authors? We were inspired by the #30Authors blog event hosted by The Book Wheel. So we thought, how about featuring the work of these authors in an anthology? We liked the idea of best-selling authors, award-winning authors and a few talented debut authors collaborating on a project. We invited them to participate, and to our delight, they were just as excited to contribute to such an anthology as we were to publish it. Why the theme of legacy? Words remain. And the writer's art is created through words. It seemed the perfect subject to explore through fiction and nonfiction stories. What is the meaning of life? How do you find meaning in life? Long after we've left this world, our legacy remains. Or doesn't. Or remains only in the minds of those who knew us, those whose lives we've touched. Those we've written to, or about. What mark would you leave? How should people remember you? Should they remember you? What sorts of tales will we find in the book? Our writers wrote along a common theme, legacy, yet each author has a different take on the idea. You'll find love stories, stories of family secrets, friendship and life-changing experiences, an on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller, a World War II mystery and Holocaust remembrance, stories of mean girls, and a tribute to rock & roll. Legacy has something for everyone.… (más)

"What's in a word," an English teacher once asked me as we sought just the right expression for the thoughts we wished to convey in a composition assignment. The editors of "Legacy: An Anthology" have assembled an insightful, absorbing - and entertaining! - answer to that question.

"Legacy," they tell us in an opening note to this collection of short stories, "is anchored in our daily lives from our first breath to well beyond our last. Present in our collective memories, it is inevitable."

Sometimes, the book that follows will struggle to live-up to its foreword ... but such was not the case here, where authors with diverse backgrounds and writing styles share their take on the idea of legacy. Some, such as Vickie Lesage's "Apfelstrudel," draw upon recent history while others, such as Stephanie Carrol's "Forget Me Not," delve lightly into the supernatural. There are others, such as Regina Calcaterra's "A Forever Home," that are not at all works of fiction ... not creative, but expository expressions of fact in today's world.

And that's just a sampling. With so many different writers, styles and subjects, there's bound to be some stories the reader enjoys more than others. Me, I didn't enjoy Kristopher Jansma's "The Uraniums" or Lizzie Harwood's "How to Raise Cats in a Paris Apartment" so much as the stories I listed in the previous paragraph ... but I am glad I read them, nonetheless. They contributed to a better understanding and appreciation I now have for the word "legacy" and what that word can mean for different people, in different times and different settings ...

... and a realization that our legacy may not take the form of a grand mausoleum or a prominent place in the history books - but it is something that will have meaning, and will resonate with those who follow ... a statue alongside a river, a special evening of music, a notebook, a quilt or a crop of forget-me-nots.

Through this book, that is what's now in the word "legacy" for me. I strongly recommend you give it a read as well, and find out for yourself what's in a word.

Legacy is a collection of fourteen short stories by different authors. As such it is hard to review if you are not going to review every story on its own. However, this would be tedious to read and not give an impression of the whole collection of stories. This is why I will try to focus on the big picture by making some general remarks and giving an insight into two of the stories.

The anthology opens with the story 'The Uraniums' by Kristopher Jansma. I found this to be a good start as it made me want to read more and keep on going with the other stories. 'The Uraniums' gets its title from a band with the same name that only has this one concert with 238 viewers. The members of the band come together from different places in the world and go their own ways again after the concert. I liked the allusion to uranium-238 but I will refrain from offering an interpretation her. I have not figured it out quite myself - and maybe there is nothing to figure out - but it got me thinking. I really liked the idea behind the story which interprets legacy as a one-time event so memorable that it leaves a legacy in the minds of each of the 238 people in the audience.

As with every collection of short stories - at least for me it is that way - I did not like every story. Some I just read and did not think about them any further. Others impressed me so much that I had to put the book away and let them sink in. 'Four Days Forever' by J. J. Hensley is a story I especially liked because of the way it was told. The story starts with the narrator pulling the trigger of a shotgun. Then the days leading up to this are related. This, however, is not done chronologically, which I thought to be a very clever idea. For me, it made the story literally outstanding. Other stories I liked were 'Sonny's Wall' by Paula Young Lee, 'Apfelstrudel' by Vicky Lesage, 'How to Raise Cats in a Paris Apartment' by Lizzie Harwood, and 'Two Kinds of Legacy' by Jenny Milchmann.

I received this book via the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program and I am glad I did. The collection of stories definitely provides something for every taste, as the stories, although revolving around the common theme 'legacy', vary in their focus. If you like to read short stories, give the book a try. 3 stars. ( )

Great concept: stories collected by a book blogger and a publisher working together. And ebook short stories are perfect for those turning unexpected waits into moments of stolen pleasure spent reading thanks to having a book handy on your phone. Of course, this type of anthology also helps introduce authors to readers and/or publishers in a direct way. Content review to follow.

I received this book from the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. I don't read many short stories, so this book was something different for me. However, I enjoyed reading this compilation of legacy-themed stories. I particularly liked "How to Raise Cats in a Paris Apartment" by Lizzie Harwood and "Two Kinds of Legacy" by Jenny Milchman. Each story in the book deals with a certain type of legacy that is left by someone. Sometimes the legacy is the one that the narrator leaves to other people; other times, it is the legacy that is left to the narrator by someone else. Sometimes it's even the legacy that an animal can leave on a human being, or the legacy that an inanimate object can have on people. All of the stories are very relatable for any reader, and I often found myself comparing things which have happened in my own life, to events which took place in these stories. A very nice anthology by Velvet Morning Press. ( )

Was given this book in exchange for honest review.

A nice collection of short stories. My personal favourites are "Nagasaki" and "The Uraniums". It's nice to see the authors' different ideas about legacy - what it truly means ( )
