This was fairly disturbing and depressing throughout: it opens with the skeletonized remains of two children being found in an underground bunker, and includes chapters from the perspective of Alison, who is in a psychiatric facility. The police procedural parts were businesslike and less creepy, although the references to some one called Stephen who killed the police inspector's parents years before the book opened felt a bit extraneous. The ending suggested more hopeful futures for the characters than I would be willing to put money on. ( )

As much as I find myself disinclined towards changes in perspective (POV) during novels, Hilary does a good job at incorporating the viewpoints of different characters into her stories. I'm not sure how I felt about the change in actual POV style (there's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd POVs in the novel) but that might just be a me thing.

Nevertheless, this book proved to be a good sequel to the first DI Rome novel, and I look forward to reading more. I quite like Hilary's writing style and have made a habit of highlighting quotes that catch my eye. ( )

When the story begins we meet two young boys, alone, and trapped underground in a bunker. They don't understand why they are there and expect someone to rescue them. Even though they are young, they slowly realize that no one is going to come for them. Fast forward five years when the bodies are discovered. This will be one of the most difficult and heart breaking cases that have ever been assigned to DI Marnie Rome. Who are the boys? Who put them in the bunker? And why haven’t they been reported as missing?

Marnie and her investigative team don't know where to start. There's Terry Doyle, who accidentally found the boys and his wife Beth. What about the construction company that built the estate, and claims they don't know about the bunker? We also have a very strange man living down the block who may or may not be a pedophile. And don't forget the gypsies who used to live in the neighborhood and were forced out about five yeas ago.

This book is dark, emotionally challenging, and unnerving. The author does a great job a defying the normal stereotypes we find in the typical police procedural. You have to look a long way to find a better crime novel. Sarah Hilary is certainly a rising star in crime fiction writing.

The second novel featuring DI Marnie Rome and her partnership with DS Noah Jake sees them investigating the discovery in Snaresbrook of two bodies of children who have been dead for about five years, with no record of them having been reported missing. The plot is intriguing and the investigation uncovers parallels with the murder of Rome’s parents five years previously. Hilary’s writing describes the disturbing mental horrors that the police must cope with and overcome. It entraps he reader in a tense tale that unfolds slowly to begin with, but speeds up dramatically as the evidence is gathered to make for a cracking finale and leaves one looking forward to the next instalment of Rome’s career.

Wie ich mich um dieses Buch beim Bloggerportal beworben habe, wusste ich nicht, dass es sich um den 2ten Teil einer Reihe handelt. Zum Glück kommt man aber gut mit auch ohne den ersten Band vorher gelesen zu haben.

Der Leser wird gleich brutal in die Story geworfen, es gibt keine Umschreibung kein Geplänkel, es geht sofort los! Terry hat beim Gemüsebeet pflanzen einen vergrabenen Bunker bei sich im Garten entdeckt. Darin befinden sich die Leichen von 2 kleinen Kindern.

Um die Kinder herum liegt Spielzeug, es gibt einen Waschbereich und einen großen Stapel Konserverdosen. Wie kommen die beiden in den Bunker, warum sind sie trotz der vorhandenen Nahrung gestorben? Wer ist dafür verantwortlich? Woher stammen die Kinder?

Fragen über Fragen die Marnie Rome und ihr Team nun klären müssen. Die Tat passierte vor ungefähr 5 Jahren und entsprechend kompliziert ist es jetzt noch Spuren zu finden. Wie verdächtig ist Clancy, der Pflegesohn von Terry? Er wurde öfters im Garten beobachtet. Auch der seltsame Nachbar mit dem Puppen Sammeltick ist nicht ganz geheuer. Ganz klar sollte die Sache sein, als Clancy sich die beiden leiblichen Kinder von Terry schnappt und mit ihnen verschwindet. Es beginnt ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit!

Ich muss gestehen, dass ich meine Probleme mit den Ermittlern hatte. Weder Marnie noch Noah waren mir auf Anhieb sympathisch (vielleicht fehlt mir hier einfach der erste Teil der Reihe wo man sicher viel zu Marnies eigener Geschichte und dem Verlust ihrer Eltern erfährt) aber trotzdem hat mich die Geschichte total mitgerissen. Jeder war verdächtig, und ich musste einfach wissen was es mit den Jungen und mit Clancy auf sich hat. Das Ende ist grandios konstruiert und lässt keine Fragen offen.

Ich werde auf jeden Fall den ersten Teil noch lesen um alles genauer kennenzulernen.

Der Schreibstil ist sehr angenehm, die Kapitel nicht zu lang und der Wechsel der Perspektiven und auch Zeiten hält das Spannungsbarometer konstant oben. Trotz nicht 100% sympathischer Ermittler eine klare Leseempfehlung von mir, die Story hat soviel mehr zu bieten als auf den ersten Blick ersichtlich ist! ( )
