"I tried to play a game. I tried to wield deceit as perfectly as the Hawks. But when I thought I was winning, I wasn't. Jethro isn't what he seems-he's the master of duplicity. However, I refuse to let him annihilate me further." Nila Weaver has grown from naïve seamstress to full-blown fighter. Every humdrum object is her arsenal, and sex...sex is her greatest weapon of all. She's paid the First Debt. She'll probably pay more. But she has no intention of letting the Hawks win. Jethro Hawk has found more than a worthy adversary in Nila-he's found the woman who could destroy him. There's a fine line between hatred and love, and an even finer path between fear and respect. The fate of his house rests on his shoulders, but no matter how much ice lives inside his heart, Nila flames too bright to be extinguished.… (más)

Ms. Winters does it again- she delivers a story beautifully written and leaves you begging for more. I have always been skeptical of the serials; however, she is a master of delivering awesomeness after awesomeness. Her talent at weaving a tale is uniquely unsurpassed in contemporary authors- she has you believing the unbelievable a 600 year old document giving the "Hawks" the right to extract debts from the "Weavers" forever. She is such a good story teller she delivers her punches and keeps you in suspense. Who is good? Who is evil? Who is telling the truth? Will the heroine survive? Is there really a chance of anything? What is the whole debt really about? Nothing is really what seems and there are a lot of players and subplots.
If you are looking for a seriously well written book (s) and the opportunity to dive into a story this is your chance you will not be disappointed. One warning, however, there are some seriously difficult scenes to read it will make you cry, flinch and maybe even wonder your sanity at reading this. Notwithstanding the anguish the reward is there and there is more to come. Wishing the other three books come quickly!
My only disappointment (and I know this is minor) I want the heroine to be smarter and less naive. She needs to toughen up and really start acting like she wants to survive and kick some Hawk ass. I know I am being harsh(and she is scared and alone and has vertigo which is awful) and that she is growing and she will get there, but I am frustrated with how unaware she seems to be and how for a "sophisticated and up and coming designer" she seems to be. I also know that she has lived a very sheltered life so therefore while I want her to have tougher skin I want to also throttle her father and brother for keeping her living in a bubble. I will continue the series because I am addicted to the writing and invested in the tension between the two characters. ( )

This book took me by surprise. You finally start to see and feel the connection between Jethro and Nila. Which, unfortunately, makes his deeds and the actions of his family all that much more despicable. The ending of this book came as a surprise. ( )

Hmmm.... Where to go with this review... This is a harder one to write seeing as so much happens and so many important things could be revealed....

I was curious how Pepper was going to stretch this series out debt by debt. I was afraid I would be getting bored with the series by now... Because that does happen sometimes after two or three books. This is not the case. I cannot wait until the fourth book in this series. I am hoping that she gets it written in a quick manner...

We are given more details on the debt in this book. We learn more about Nila and Jethro and Kes. We are also introduced to more family members.

The build up to the second debt is torturous! I found myself anticipating what it possibly could be. Once it finally got there, I was floored. Astounded. My heart broke for Jethro and Nila. Their characters had opened up and grew so much right up to the second debt. Then everything changed.

The ending? Be prepared for a shocker for this ending! I sat there slack jawed. I never saw it coming! I promise, you won't either.

Words I would use to describe not just this book, but the entire series so far...
Thrilling
Susupenseful
Intriguing
Nail Biting
Heart Twisting
Gut Wrenching
Genius

Words I have thought constantly reading not just this book, but the entire series so far...
OH MY GOD, WHAT?!?!?
Oh shit, NO!
Bastard
Mother Fucker
Asswipe
Son of a bitch!
Oh no he didn't
You go girl
Sat what?!?!?
**gasp**

If you have read the first two books in this series, don't hesitate to read it. If you haven't started it for what ever reason, you should pick up the first two and this one. No matter what, I promise you won't be disappointed.

What in the world is going on? We do learn quite a bit more in this book than any of the previous. I do appreciate it being less vague, but still I really have no idea what the point of all this family's madness is. The Hawks are serial killers who love to follow tradition and rules while going about their murdering. Their perplexing behavior is a bit tiresome.

The level of which Grandma stays pissed along with vague reverences about the sister and a few other little dropped bits make me think this is more than just an ancient grudge. Surely a family couldn't hold on to anger for that many generations with nothing fueling it.

We see a little more into Jethro in this episode. He grew immensely on me as well as on Nila. They do the back and forth fighting and loving again. All of this comes to a significant head with the second debt. It's quite a doozie too. The first debt in my opinion was pretty standard in books, but this second debt is pretty damn dark and not erotic at all to me. Props to Pepper for giving me new nightmare material.

I wasn't expecting the way it ended at all. The next book will definitely have a different starting point than these last two. I'm looking forward to the answers to this mystery.
