The Book of the Seven Delights was called "a treasure" (Booklist, starred review). Now, the New York Times bestselling author presents the much-anticipated second novel in her Victorian-set romantic adventure series.   Cordelia Blackburn has struck a deal with her crusty tycoon of a grandfather to fund an expedition that will make her name as an explorer. But first, he requires she prove herself--by locating three Mayan stone carvings and something known as "the gift of the jaguar."    To make matters worse, he insists on sending someone along to authenticate her findings--his arrogant butler!--and it becomes clear that a powerful and ruthless third party is set on finding the fabled stones and treasure first   As the trail leads them across the Caribbean and into Mexico, Cordelia learns that tall, sardonic Hartford Goodnight is far more than just a butler. And Goodnight learns that beautiful, provocative Cordelia is as tough as she is tempting. Soon the pair is hip deep in danger and desire, racing the competition to the prize--and trying to keep the sparks between them from setting the rainforest ablaze.   "[Readers] will take immense delight in Betina Krahn's fabulous late Victorian tale."--The Best Reviews   "[A] lively romp. Look for her trademark wit, her appealing characters, and a delightful dose of the exotic."--Library Journal  … (más)

A fun Indiana Jones/The Mummy with fun combative leads and adventure in a South American jungle.

Enjoyed the byplay between main couple, the second half brought in more of the adventure and the romance got left behind a little; the "I love yous" felt suddenly said.
Fun time overall though, the heroine was a blast with her competence along the hero's befuddlement turned attraction to her capabilities. ( )

This is historical romantic adventure. Think The Mummy or Indiana Jones.

Cordelia O'Keefe is an adventurer. To fund her next expedition, she's forced to turn to her last resort--Samuel P. Blackburn, the wealthy grandfather who'd disowned her father before Cordelia was even born. Samuel P. is a scheming manipulator, and he agrees, but only if she'll find the "Gift of the Jaguar" for him. And she has to take his fussy, sarcastic butler, Hartford Goodnight along to report back to him. He entrusts the funds to Goodnight so she's not tempted to ditch the butler somewhere along the way.

From then on, it's page-turning adventure, with one thrilling situation after another. The quest takes them from Florida to Cuba and then to Mayan ruins in the jungle. They encounter revolutionaries, gun-runners, and natives, some who help them, and some who want to beat them to the treasure and will stop at nothing to get it. They also encounter venomous snakes, quirky donkeys, and a mysterious jaguar, along with an incredible variety of flora.

Goodnight turns out to be much more than Cordelia expected, and their romance grows along with their understanding and respect for each other.

I really cannot recommend this book highly enough--it's just so much fun! The characters and the situations and the settings are so vivid that it's like watching an adventure movie even for someone as non-visually-oriented as I am. In fact, The Book of True Desires would make a fabulous feature film. ( )
