The book covers a trading journey from Bechuanaland (now Botswana) to Cape Colony (now Namibia). It's a detailed picture of life as it were for a hunter come trader in late 1800s Africa.
The journey starts off with the writer nearly dying of thirst, and covers several set backs and near death experiences.
There is an appalling loss of animal life during the journey. Shooting giraffe for a steak for two people to go with the other game you already killed... In depth detail of how to cook elephants foot... ivory harvesting... leopard skin harvesting, lion skin harvesting the list goes on. The author even notes if Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had seen the way they treat their oxen they'd be in strife.
It really is a candid and vivid look into life back then, there's no rose coloured glasses it's just told as it happened, no political correctness. I found it a very enjoyable look into the Africa of a time passed. ( )
