So much of this book requires suspension of disbelief and I just couldn't do it. Not with the main male lead's carrier, book and opinions, not with the incident with the cat, not with the romance or their compatibility. On top of that all the characters were over the top and dislikeable for various reasons. If that isn't bad enough, the main female lead clearly has an eating disorder and it is treated like it is completely normal. I have read a number of Macomber's books and enjoyed them, but this one is not one I could ever recommend. Katherine O'Connor often spends her days at a cozy cafe on Blossom Street in Seattle, where she writes Christmas letters for other people. She's good at making their everyday lives sound more interesting. More humorous. More dramatic. But for Dr. Wynn Jeffries, who also frequents the cafe, Christmas means lies and deception. In fact, the renowned child psychologist recommends that parents "Bury Santa Under the Sleigh." Katherine, however, feels that his parenting philosophy is one big mistake-at least, based on her four-year-old twin nieces, who are being raised according to his "Free Child" methods. She argues with Wynn about his theories, while he argues that her letters are nothing but lies. They disagree about practically everything-and yet, somehow, they don't really want to stop arguing. As the days-and nights-move closer to Christmas, Katherine and Wynn both discover that love means accepting your differences. And Christmas is about the things you share. The most disappointing part of this book is Wynn breaking off the relationship with Katharine because she truthfully expressed her feelings toward his book. His ego couldn't handle it. Then we have Katharine berating herself for speaking her mind and not "keeping her mouth shut." And she went to apologize to him.
I am trying to consider the book was published in 2006 but it's recent enough that this is not a good depiction of a healthy relationship.
Overall, the story was ok but it will probably keep me from picking up any other Debbie Macomber books. (
