Here is the world's first apocalyptic, comedic, vampire thriller! Filled with romance and set in the modern West, it's The Cowboy and the Vampire by Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall. New York City reporter Lizzie Vaughan doesn't know it, but she has 2,000 years of royal Vampiric blood coursing through her veins. Tucker, her cowboy boyfriend of six months, has a place in Lonepine, Wyoming, where there is little to do besides drink beer and wonder about who's cheating on whom at the Sleep-O-Rama Motel. Lizzie and Tucker don't know it, but their lives are about to take as many twists and turns as a bucking bronco ride. Julius, the megalomaniac Vampire leader, wants his horde of maniacal followers to vanquish every living being on the planet so he can reign over Darkness for all eternity-with Lizzie at his side. But there are a few little problems he has to iron out first... Julius' fatally seductive Vampire consort, Elita, is furious. She wants to be the only woman in Julius' undead life. His archenemy Lazarus, once the most powerful Vampire on the planet, is undoubtedly plotting against Julius and his diabolical scheme. But Julius has been living a quiet life, eating HoHos and reading the tabloids-has he lost his taste for bloodshed? Lizzie herself is being difficult-she doesn't want to be Queen of the Vampires, or as she calls them, "blood-sucking, crazy freaks." Finally, there's Tucker, who is coming for his woman with his dog, his gun, and a couple of ragtag cowhands. Who will be left when the sun rises?… (más)

Tough cowboy Tucker live on his ranch, with his dog and his horse. His comfortable life is changed when he meets a NYC reporter who wants to interview a 'real cowboy" She ends up reviewing him between the sheet and they begin an affair with her traveling to visit him on his ranch. The lust turns to love and so it begins.
There is one big crack in the romance, more than one. She is descended from a long line of vampires and is wanted by Mr. Big Bad Vampire for her monthly visitor. It seems that devouring that will give him the powers to control the world. This Mr. Big bad is also her father. He kidnaps her and it's up to Tucker and the only smart one in the book to save her, the dog. The ending was a cliffhanger, not something I care t follow up on.
I was interested with the story in the beginning, it had a great concept. But when the vampires came in to it went quickly down hill, fast and deep. They were cheesy villains, they acted stereotypical bad B movie vampires. The stupid bits with the cowboy lingo from these upper crust NYC characters ?? I was shaking my head, it was so ridiculous. Was it to be funny ? Maybe, but it feel flat for me. The incest, why ? Why did this guy have to be her father, and why did it have to go there ? Too much, taboo for this reader.
Tucker, he was an idiot. He put everyone in danger. He went to hit his dog for being smart. He risked his father his friends, and no it wasn't a romantic save. His dog was the only character I cheered for. I wanted to rescue him from this story.
I didn't like it. I didn't find it funny. I could not recommend it. ( )

This was so much fun to read. I bought it back in December and didn't finish it but today I was inspired and I am so glad I did.

Cowboys and Vampires and Century old dudes in mud OH MY!

I recommend this to anyone who is tired of the same old vampire myths. It really took on a wonderful twist to the normal myths out there, plus these vampires do not sparkle! ( )

The Cowboy and The Vampire is a book in perfect balance with itself. It mixes the classic love story with a heart-pounding and thrilling modern horror and even has a huge amount of comedy. The writer also does a wonderful job in making the reader truely care for the main characters. Clark Hays also goes back and forth between the lovers to show both sides while making it a smooth story that flows. With a shocking but amazing ending, I believe it to be one of the best books around. ( )

I have seen reviews for this on Amazon and nearly all are right up there at 4-5 stars. The only reason I can think for that is that this novel came out in 1999 and this would have been counted among the first on the Vampire/romance/humor genre that was really just getting started. So, these other people didn't have any better writing to compare it to? That's all I can think.

Because I thought the writing was silly and as much as I wanted to like the story (because I really do like the genre although not so much the humorous ones) I just couldn't. And it is not really a romance - so I guess the 'unusual' does apply. One of the authors is a man and I can definitely feel his influence - some men are not very good at writing a character without coming totally at it from a man's view and that's what I get at times, regardless of the gender of the character.

Having said all of this, I did find the book amusing at times and there was some really enjoyable dry humor going on.

This book just wan't for me. ( )
