This is an excellent book. Kezia and her family are slaves for a family in Virginia. Her father is sold and taken from his family. Her mother works extra to buy Kezia freedom, but she does not make enough. Her mother arranges for her and others to travel on the underground railroad in hopes of getting to Canada. Kezia realiizes all of the signs her mother made, risking her life to get others to freedom. The author's note gives extra information. This would be great for children of many ages learning about pre-civil war times, slavery, or the underground railroad. ( )
