Next stop on Carole P. Roman’s around the world trip is Scotland. This series introduces children to cultural exploration and answers the questions that children would most likely ask. What would children in Scotland call their mom and dad? What games would they play, and what do they celebrate? What kinds of foods are common? Where are the fun places to visit?

Each book in the series has a pronunciation guide and definitions for more complicated or unfamiliar words. It has colorful illustrations and easy to read text. I highly recommend not only Scotland, but all of the books in this series. What a wonderful way to teach children about their peers around the world without any politics involved. I also think they would be wonderful for elementary age Sunday Schools to spark an interest in missions around the world. ( )

After reading a novel set in Scotland this week, I felt it was the perfect time to learn a bit about Scotland's culture as well. Both authors did a fine job of teaching all the wonderful things about Scotland. In fact, I even learned something while reading about this great country!

I had no idea that Scotland was made up of 790 islands. I am sure I learned this fact at some point in my education, but it never stuck with me. Of course, when you think of Scotland, the mystical Loch Ness Monster always comes to mind, but there is so much more to learn about Scotland.

Scotland is definitely on my list of countries I'd like to visit some day and this book just confirmed it. By sharing this book and others by Roman, you can teach your children about all the wonderful places that make up our world. These books share their country's language, culture, food, and sports with the reader and offer a look into a country that is different from where we live. You just might find that we have things in common too!

If you are looking for books to teach your children about other cultures, I highly recommend this series of books by Carole P Roman. They would make an excellent addition to a home or school library. ( )

Scotland is at the north end of Great Britain. I didn’t know until I read this book that Scotland has more than 790 islands in the North Sea. The capital is Edinburg. Many of its buildings were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Common names in Scotland would be Ian, Connor or Malcom for boys and Kelsey, Aillen or Margaret for girls. The word for mommy is Mathair and daddy is Dadadh. The official animal of Scotland is the mythological creature known as a unicorn. They are well known for their lake the Loch Ness and its creature known as the Loch Ness Monster or Nessie. They eat oatmeal called porridge for breakfast, tattie scones which are potato muffins. They eat a lot of fish dishes. They use oats for all kinds of things from stuffing to desserts. One of their favorite sports is golf. They have the Highland games. They dress in kilts, tartans and plaids. One of their most well known instruments is the bagpipes. I absolutely love these books. It is a way for students to travel the world and learn about different cultures without leaving their home.
I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed are my own. ( )
