Toshinari Seki takes goofing off to new heights. Every day, on or around his school desk, he masterfully creates his own little worlds of wonder, often hidden to most of his classmates. Unfortunately for Rumi Yokoi, his neighbor at the back of their homeroom, his many games, dioramas, and projects are often way too interesting to ignore; even when they are hurting her grades.… (más)

Currently enjoying my recent plunge into Manga, I really enjoyed the first book in this middle-grade Manga series.

One boy and one girl sit next to each other in class. One is obedient and peeved at her next door neighbor's indifference to what is happening around him. While she insists she will be ignoring his antics, building chess games on his desk, varnishing his desk with multi-finishes to make it a mirror ( which delights her); bringing two cats to class to sprawl on his lap and desk, while no one around them notices, but, of course, her. In fact, she is ironically blamed for most of his shenanigans. Her constant anxiety and stress with him is super dramatic, the visuals especially, and all of this is a little strange at first if you are not used to Manga, however it seems like it is deliberate for: 1. This particular genre ( I am still learning what's typical and what's not) to convey the hyper emotional state of ones tween years. Another reason I thought the melodrama in the language and images was probably normal was, duh, that it fit into their whole dynamic and her growing intrigue with him. It was very believable in terms of a middle-school crush/budding friendship between opposites. But I have only read one, and hope to visit more soon!

I got this as a gift! So unexpected. Apparently it was a standalone but got so popular that it kept going? I don't know if I'll ever collect the rest but this was such a fun read.

The humour is based on mundane things becoming super intens. Which is exactly what I like! So I actually giggled a lot while reading this.

Such a good gift. ( )

This was just too dry for me. It's not giving the entertainment it's supposed to.
