A heart-wrenching tale of selfless love and the powerful desire to survive.  In an unnamed country, when little Kai is brought to the orphanage run by Bell, a fearsome Englishwoman whose dedication to her charges is unflinching, an older child, Pax, immediately takes him under his wing. It soon becomes apparent that Kai is a brilliant child, and given the right circumstances, could go on to achieve great things.  Penniless and living amidst political strife and constant uncertainty, the children are nonetheless taken care of  and protected--until Bell dies and they are left on their own. Pax is determined to keep Kai safe, and to make sure he gets the education he deserves. But life on the streets is tough--and dangerous.  In a desperate attempt to make enough money to keep Kai in school, Pax agrees to work for a shady character known only as Mister. Mister sends Pax on a "special" mission--carry a very heavy box to a pre-arranged location, and wait. At the very last minute, Pax realizes that the box contains a bomb, which explodes, killing and maiming hundreds of people. Pax and Kai escape the deadly explosion, only to be arrested soon after and charged with terrorism. What follows is a descent into the hellish prison where brutal guards stop at nothing to make Pax talk.  This haunting novel brings home the tragic situation in which children in over 40 countries are tortured with impunity. But it also speaks to the strength of love in the most dire situations.                                                                                                  … (más)

This is a Red Maple 2015 - 2016 nomination.
Pax is seven when a new born baby is left with Bell who run the unapproved orphanage known as the Pink house. Although Pax lives with five other street orphans, he instantly has a soft spot for the baby and names him Kai. Pax becomes Kai's guardian, father, teacher and looks after all of his needs. Pax is aware that Child Services told Bell not to accept anymore children, and that she went against their wishes when she allowed Kai into her home. He doesn't trust Child Services and when Bell gets sick and dies, Pax destroys his and Kai's paperwork and takes to the streets with Kai, who by now, has demonstrated that he is extremely smart and deserving of an education.
Their lives on the streets are heartbreaking and a demonstration of the lengths Pax will go to in providing for and protecting Kai. ( )

This is a novel about injustice, a truly realistic novel that will make you weep.

Pax and Kai live with Bell in a home, although it’s considered an unauthorized orphanage. Bell is not liked by the government because she is from England, a foreigner. Kai comes to live with them after she is told to no longer accept any more children. Therefore, when she dies, Kai has little documentation. Pax, afraid of being taken by the government, tears up his and Kai’s papers and takes to the streets. What ensues is a life on the streets, trying to make money because Pax knows that Kai is a genius and needs to go to school. Those of the government and those who are criminals take advantage of the good inside Pax and Kai.

This is a novel meant to spur the reader into action. There are many countries where human rights are unheard of and people are tortured for any reason. This is a realistic novel about life in these countries. There is a tragic and a beautiful ending to the novel, but be prepared with kleenexes. ( )

Seven-year-old Pax and his five "siblings" - all street orphans - have been raised by Bell in "The Pink House" since they were infants and toddlers. Against the imposed restrictions of the government Child Services, Bell reluctantly accepts a seventh child into her household, a new born baby whom Pax names Kai and also for whom he takes on the responsibility of protecting. When Bell gets sick and dies, the children are placed in the care of Child Services; however, feeling betrayed because he will be separated from Kai, Pax decides to rip up his and Kai's identification forms and escapes to live on the streets with his little "brother." This is a touching, heartbreaking tale of cruelty, corruption, resilience and loyalty. Highly recommended. I absolutely adore anything that this author puts her pen to. ( )
