The third issue of "Innsmouth Magazine" opens with a reprint of David Conyers' "The Swelling" which was first published in "The King in Yellow" (2007) from Atlantean Press. This is an intriguing, complex tale about people lost at sea and one woman's desire to reach "the distant shores of Lake Hali, where fabled Carcosa lay". The story requires patience and more than a little bit of work from the reader. "The Black Ship" by Rebecca Nazar works as a sequel to Lovecraft's "The White Ship" and is a clever continuation of the tale. Told by Sonya-Nell Elton, daughter of Basil Elton and keeper of the North Point Light, it is a hugely enjoyable dream-cycle tale that captures the nuance and cadence of Lovecraft's writing. "Nature vs. Nurture" by Orrin Grey is a story of ghouls and the baby ghoul that the narrator brings home to study. As the ghoul grows, however, he begins to have doubts as does his comrade Harter, the ghoul hunter. "One Dead Eye" by Avery Cahill is a classically styled Lovecraftian tale wherein Professor Jonathan Marsh gives evidence into the disappearance of his dear friend Dr Scott Norwood. The story revolves around the religious relic, "the famous finger of St. Altwerden" and the strange visions it brings on. This is a great piece of Lovecraft homage that incrementally ratchets up the tension before Cahill brings it to a punchy and horrific conclusion. Finally "If You Want To Leave a Message" by G. W. Thomas is a short tale about the "cacophony of gibberish" and other unusual sounds on Laurie's answering machine. Short, sharp and clever, this is an excellent little story, with a clever open opening. Overall the five stories in this issue are all very good with no real failures; each of them is styled differently, but each of them has a great Lovecraftian flavour about them and are enjoyable and polished.
