Murder in Haunted Cornwall On the eve of World War II, Dr. Benjamin Bones is at war with himself. While most young men are being sent away to fight the Germans, Ben is chosen to serve on English soil. Ordered to move to wild, beautiful Cornwall, he must trade his posh London office and stylish city life for the tiny village of Birdswing, which has a population of 1,221 souls. But leaving his home and shelving his career ambitions aren't the only sacrifices he faces. His unfaithful wife, Penny, is accompanying him to Cornwall in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. But moments after their arrival, Penny is run down in the street, and Ben is almost fatally injured. And while the villagers assume Penny's death to be an accident, Ben quickly deduces it was murder. As he convalesces in Fenton House, which the locals call haunted, Ben meets Birdswing's eccentric inhabitants. Mr. Gaston, the volunteer air warden who's obsessed with defending his remote village against Nazi spies, Mrs. Cobblepot, a thoroughly practical housekeeper who believes in fairies, and Lady Juliet Linton, a prickly, headstrong aristocrat who won't take no for an answer. While adapting to life during Britain's "War at Home," a time of ration books, victory gardens, bomb shelters, and the Blackout, Ben sets about solving the mystery of Penny's murder - with a little help from Lady Juliet and the Fenton House ghost. From Emma Jameson, the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Lord & Lady Hetheridge Mystery Series, comes this delightful new amateur sleuth, Dr. Benjamin Bones.… (más)

Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries Book 1
  SueJBeard | Jan 8, 2023 |
Bones in the Blackout is written by Emma Jameson. This title is Book #1 in Ms. Jameson’s series, Dr. Benjamin Bones Mystery series.
Ms. Jameson has also published the Jem Jago series and the Lord and Lady Hetheridge series. (All ‘cozy’ mysteries)
From the author: ”Originally published in 2014 under the title, Marriage Can be Murder, I decided to relaunch the series in 2022 with new titles and covers in the hope of reaching new readers.”
“I have always found the War at Home aspect of Britain’s Second World War quite fascinating. After the fall of France, England faced the very real possibility of invasion. Bombing, rationed petrol, and rolling food shortages made everyday life difficult. Yet people endured and pulled together, aware of tremendous sacrifices being made overseas. I can’t imagine a more exciting and dramatic period to explore in fiction.”

“Cornwall. 1939. Dr. Benjamin Bones can mend everything but his broken heart. The physician has become numbed by his wife’s infidelity and the war-induced loss of his London practice. But his last-ditch attempt to save their marriage turns to horror when he witnesses a roadside collision that claims the wife of his spouse and that he believes is murder.”

A good mystery. Eccentric characters. Good location. Energetic writing style. **** ( )

1939, medical-doctor, Cornwall, murder, murder-investigation, ghosts, amateur-sleuth, intolerance, relatives, relationships, rehabilitation, relocation, resilience, fiction, first-in-series, situational-humor, verbal-humor*****

It begins with a bang! Dr Ben bones and his unfaithful wife are relocating from London to Cornwall at the earliest part of WW2 by government assignment. Turns out that the town is where said wife grew up. Before anything can come of that, a lorry smashes into them while they are out of the car looking for lodging in the blackout. She gets run over twice and is quite dead, while he has his legs broken (one quite badly). Thus begins the tale of his mental and physical rehabilitation, meeting new friends and acquaintances, and investigating the whole mess. There are some really fun characters. sneaky plot twists, and even a mystifying red herring or three. Great cosy read!
Wonderful narration as always by voice actor Matthew Lloyd Davies. ( )

It's 1939 England and Dr. Benjamin Bones has been assigned as the doctor to the village of Birdswing and its surrounding area. But for his wife, Penny, it is a return to her old life, a return she doesn't welcome.
But moments after arriving she is killed and the Doctor seriously injured.
Once recovered he joins with Lady Juliet to find the guilty party.
I enjoyed this well-written mystery with some well-rounded characters, and look forward to reading the next in the series. ( )

A great read, and an interesting collection of characters. I particularly liked the very unstereotypical heroine Lady Juliet and am looking forward to reading more about her in subsequent novels. There was a (small) supernatural element which I found unnecessary and kind of jarring with the style of the rest of the novel, but overall it's very much a cozy mystery with likeable characters and a charming setting.
