Fantasy. Fiction. Literature. HTML:

In this riveting sequel to the national bestseller The Queen of the Tearling, the evil kingdom of Mortmesne invades the Tearling, with dire consequences for Kelsea and her realm.

With each passing day, Kelsea Glynn is growing into her new responsibilities as Queen of the Tearling. By stopping the shipments of slaves to the neighboring kingdom of Mortmesne, she crossed the Red Queen, a brutal ruler whose power derives from dark magic, who is sending her fearsome army into the Tearling to take what is hers. And nothing can stop the invasion.

But as the Mort army draws ever closer, Kelsea develops a mysterious connection to a time before the Crossing, and she finds herself relying on a strange and possibly dangerous ally: a woman named Lily, fighting for her life in a world where being female can feel like a crime. The fate of the Tearling â??and that of Kelsea's own soulâ??may rest with Lily and her story, but Kelsea may not have enough time to find out.

In this dazzling sequel, Erika Johansen brings back favorite characters, including the Mace and the Red Queen, and introduces unforgettable new players, adding exciting layers to her multidimensional tale of magic, mystery, and a fierce young heroine… (más)

I find this series to be really refreshing and a bit darker than others in the genre, but this book itself wasn't as good as the first. I enjoyed it, but wasn't as hooked or amazed. It might be because so much of it was set in New York, or it's just really ramping up for book 3.

Would fit The 52 Book Club's 2021 prompts:

I enjoyed the first book in this series but this second book....is annoying. I'm almost sorry I read it instead of waiting until Book 3 was ready to read so I could have powered through all of them. As it stands now I am irked enough with what happened that I might not even bother with the finale.

My major problem is that I can't accept the magic sapphires. The entire plot revolves around them and there is not even a hint of explanation of what they do, what their origin is, why they are important.

I would be OK with magic, I think, if they explained that this is a world where magic existed but they try to pretend that it doesn't yet have it as the central part of so much of the story. Irritating.

I also really can't stand the weird baby-making obsession of the old world and the weird corrupt church. I don't understand why it exists in the story or how it happened with how specific Tear was about the crossing.

I will grant that this is a page turner but it never paid off for me and it made the heroine a lot less likable than she was in the beginning. ( )

I began this series after hearing the reaction of.. what I thought was Cheesy.. but it must have been KathyB. (as Cheesy still has it marked TBR) I was not disappointed. This was quite enjoyable. I wouldn't have picked this up at all if I hadn't heard KathyB rave about it. I'm looking forward to the final part of the trilogy. ( )

Loved this! Can't believe it's taken me this long to continue with this series. I love the characters in here, especially some of the side characters like Ewen and Aisa. I loved Lily's POV, the ending was so good. Can't wait to finish up this series.

CW: Sexual assault, domestic violence, physical and verbal abuse ( )

I have a lot of feelings about this book. It did not work on the same line as the first book, while it still was good and I found myself deeply invested. I felt the main character suffered at the birth of the newer main character in the other timeline. I care more about the main world, but felt like the writer was more invest in the newer one. I wish the newer one had been a novella, rather than a concurrent story telling.

I am waffly on how this book became presently political as well, even while I appreciate the topics on which it focused (sex, cutting, dystopic government, and race/gender relations). It felt like these things made it a book that should have been in another series, because the whole first book missed having any of these notes. ( )
