With superstrength and invulnerability, Alison Green used to be one of the most powerful superheroes around. Fighting crime with other teenagers under the alter ego Mega Girl was fun until an encounter with Menace, her mind reading arch enemy. He showed her evidence of a sinister conspiracy, and suddenly battling giant robots didn't seem so important. Now Alison is going to college and trying to find ways to help the world while still getting to class on time. It's impossible to escape the past, however, and everyone has their own idea of what it means to be a hero. Strong Female Protagonist has been published online since 2012, where it attracted a large fan base, and earned positive reviews on sites such as io9, ComicsAlliance, The Beat, and ThinkProgress. After a successful Kickstarter, Brennan and Molly now bring their series to print, with a book collecting the first four chapters and bonus material, self-published by the authors and distributed by Top Shelf.… (más)

Strong Female Protagonist explores the nuances of privilege: being born with power you didn't ask for, being admired for things you regret doing, feeling simultaneously too big and too small for your britches... and it's also about superheroes.

The story and art are a little unpolished (it gets better in later chapters), but dang the moral quandaries in here are just so ~spicy~

Content warnings for this series as a whole: physical and emotional abuse of a child, graphic violence, gore, homophobia mention, transphobia mention, kidnapping, torture, pregnancy, mental illness ( )

Staying at my friends' house in Vancouver and they had so many books there - I picked this one up because comics tend to be possible to finish in one or two sittings. This is an interesting deconstruction of the superhero genre. Quite good. ( )

I read this as a library ebook. Then I proceeded to spend the rest of the evening reading the webcomic to catch up to ‘now’. I regret nothing. It was really well done. ( )

I love this with a thousand hearts. I sort of don't want to return it to the library (settle down-I will). I was on hold for this so long, I forgot what it was about. That level of interest, at least in my part of the country, makes me happy, because a kickstarter campaign got this web comic in print, and I hope to see another volume. I always have good intentions with web comics, but then I eventually lose track of them. I'll try extra hard with this one, because I want to follow Allison's story.

The conflicted superhero has been done before, but Mulligan and Ostertag did it really well. There's not much that's black and white in this story of what super humans decide to do with their super powers, and there's lots of humor to keep things from being overwrought. The authors' commentary on the bottom of every page is what I liked most about the book. Even the author bios made me laugh. ( )
