This book is what a popular "romance" would have looked like had it been realistic. I was so convinced I was reading a parody of it, that I laughed for the first bit. Within the first twenty pages, I was ashamed to realize that no, it wasn't a parody, and was an unrelated thriller. I still identified the tropes, though. It was--I don't really have words, I guess. As most that know me know by now I am not fan of romance novels. Even though it is advertised as a Mystery/Suspense novel it has more romance than mystery. Still it was a decent read even if it does border a bit on the ridiculous side. Bailey meets this charming man on vacation. She knows absolutely nothing about his background but what the heck?...lets marry him anyway. Seems the "charming, handsome" man left out one small detail when telling her how great he is...his ex-wife. Not just his ex wife but his MISSING ex wife. To make matters more ridiculous seems she wasn't the first woman that has come up missing that became involved with Mr. Charming. I gave it 4 stars because it was intriguing to see just how dumb our Bailey was going to be before she too came up missing. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
"As a child, Bailey Browne dreamed of a knight in shining armor swooping in to rescue her and her mother. As she grows older, those dreams transform, becoming ones of a mysterious stranger who will sweep her off her feet and whisk her away from her ordinary existence. Then, suddenly, there he is. Despite the ten year difference in their ages, her working class upbringing and his of privilege, Logan Abbott and Bailey fall deeply in love. Marriage quickly follows. But when Logan brings her home to his horse farm in Louisiana, a magnificent estate on ninety wooded acres, her dreams of happily-ever-after begin to unravel. A tragic family history she knew nothing about surfaces, plus whisperings about the disappearance of his first wife, True, and rumors about the women from the area who have gone missing--and when another woman disappears, all signs point to her husband's involvement. At first Bailey ignores the whispers, even circumstantial evidence against Logan mounts. But finally, Bailey must make a choice: believe what everyone says--or bet her life on the man she loves, but is realizing she hardly knows. From the author of Justice for Sara, Erica Spindler's The First Wife is a thrilling new novel that will have you gasping on every page"-- No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

― Erica Spindler, The First Wife
The First Wife is a mystery and a Gothic novel. Bailey has just married a man she has known for only a short time. She goes to live with him on his large ranch. But people don't take to Bailey to well and she begins to learn things about her new husband that make her aware he maybe not such a nice guy. Actually that is putting it mildly! And someone may want Bailey out of her husband's life. Maybe permanently..
This was a good Gothic read. I liked the character of Bailey. And I liked the sprawling home where this whole mystery takes place. Added bonus is it takes place in Louisiana. The atmosphere was there and beautifully written.
Even though I did enjoy reading this, I did not love it. I thought it was not all that difficult to figure this one out. I'd have liked the pool of suspects to have been a bit larger. Also the middle half drags somewhat. I did find my attention wandering around that time.
Still it was atmospheric and a true Gothic read so if that's what you are looking for you will most likely enjoy this book. ( )
