Preparations for the Ghastly-Gorm Garden Party and bake-off are under way. Celebrity cooks are arriving at the hall for the big event and, true to form, Maltravers, the indoor gamekeeper, is acting suspiciously. spiralsheep: Readers who enjoy pun-tastic gothic children's stories with feisty and resourceful heroines will enjoy these books. Chris Riddell's Goth Girl series has a gentler Romanticism, while David Henry Wilson's Castle of Inside Out (with illustrations by Chris Riddell) has a grimmer core akin to Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm, and a very junior Gormenghast. I believe they'll appeal to the same readers, young and old alike.… (más)

As much as I like the idea of the Goth Girl series (charming characters, great illustrations, and humourous Gothic adventures) I’m just not quite feeling them. Ada Goth serves as a great example of a young female character with spunk, but her stories almost have too much going on in them for readers to really settle into them and get to know her. I guess that’s indicative of the overabundance of entertainment sources that modern readers are faced with, but it unfortunately doesn’t come across as well as a more simply structured and powerful story. Gorgeous illustrations, and for a children's book it has amazing literary allusions that make it fun for adults. (
