Tried to remember this book was written for children (though it appears to violate many of the things that I have been told is needed when writing for children - the language is simple, but many words used that are probably not considered grade-level appropriate for anything below high school, and they are not children any more). A quick run through the history of Egypt up to the time of Octavius Caesar. The layout and format is good, the appendices give some very useful tables, and the pictures/captions are fascinating. The main problem is that it is not very in depth, which is why I am trying to remember that it was written for children, so in depth analysis would not be expected. The role of this work is to introduce young people to a long ago culture that has left a major mark on our world, and that shows signs of high art and culture long before we see such things in western Europe. As such, it is a success, as the information given would likely stimulate a child (or an adult) to learn more about this elaborate and highly advanced culture, and not just for pyramids.
