"The ever-delightful, insatiably curious Edinburgh philosopher and amateur sleuth returns to take on a case unlike any she's had before--this one with paranormal implications--in the tenth installment of this beloved author's consistently best-selling series. From a small town outside Edinburgh comes the news that a young boy has been recounting vivid recollections of a past life: a perfect description of an island off the coast of Scotland which he couldn't possibly know, and a house there, where he claims to have spent his former life. When the boy's mother asks Isabel to investigate his claims, she feels she must--of course!--help them learn the truth, and she and her husband, Jamie, set off for the island. But finding the house the boy described only leads to more complicated questions. And when she learns about the unusual story of the family who lived there, Isabel is suddenly faced with a situation of extraordinary delicacy that will require all of her skills both as sleuth and philosopher"--… (más)

Another enjoyable read in the Isabel Dalhousie series. ( )

Slow-paced, thought-packed and filled with the philosophical considerations only Isabel could offer. She loves her life, her family, friends, her work and Scotland. In this novel, she helps a mother and son with a uniquely troubling situation.

McCall-Smith brings up a gamut of philosophical questions in this series. Isabel, considerate and helpful, sometimes jumps to conclusions about people. She can be bit of a snob she assumes poorer or uneducated peopleless have less intelligence and sensitivity.

She is often humbled when she catches herself making these errors of judgment. She immediately regrets her thought process learning from her mistakes.

A wonderful, very thoughtful series.

The Novel Habits of Happiness is rather charming and kept my interest. As a book, it is just a little bit of silly fluff, light reading at most.
The book is filled with character descriptions and character development that the story does not warrant. Moreover, several characters are introduced and not used in the story at all. The plot, what there is of one, does not appear until 26% of the way through the book, is handled only sparingly for the next 50% of the book and then brought to a quick conclusion based upon too many coincidental to be credible.
It is a pity, really, because the characters that were developed were interesting and some of what could have been subplots looked promising. Overall, however, we are left with a simple plot based upon an unlikely circumstance and character. Who involves herself with a stranger in ways that defy credibility and brought to a quick, overly pat, resolution. ( )

This installment of the Isabel Dalhousie series was outright boring. Isabel was too much of a goody two shoes with dull musings. There was not enough real plot. I was disappointed. Alexander Mc Call Smith can do better than this. ( )

Resistance is futile, at least for me. A charming visit. ( )
