Crime This is the third in the NYPD sereis and it was as good as the first in my opinion. The main characters in the series are Detective Zach Jordan and his partner (and one-time love interest) Kylie MacDonald, who are part of the elite task force that is charged with protecting the rich and famous in New York City. Hunter Alden's chauffeur is murdered and decapitated. His head is delivered to Alden in his son, Tripp's camera case with a cryptic message. Whatever the message means, Alden does not want anyone to know, and that includes keeping the head hidden and his son's disappearance a secret. Zach and Kylie, however, aren't buying it, and the chase is on to find out what happened to Tripp without upsetting the family or getting the Mayor on their case. Throughout it all, Zach has to juggle his feelings for Kylie, who's married to a drug addict who keeps backsliding, and Cheryl, a psychologist who is now his love interest. There is usually some romantic interest in his books, this one is a little of a love triangle. There are lots of twists and turns (both right and wrong), and one that was very surprising. I usually do not get taken by surprise but it happened here. The ending was a best for all conclusion, but it did not make a lot of people happy. In fact, the premise of what Hunter Alden is keeping secret is actually rather disgusting and I was even surprised that James Patterson would come up with it at all. All in all, another good read.
