Set in late 19th century San Francisco, this series focuses on a male and female detective team that is investigating missing corpses in order to avoid gang wars between the Chinese while sorting out cases that show the money problems of the rich. In the midst is a Sherlock Holmes figure who is portrayed as a fake, though it is unclear why this is necessary. ( ) I had seen books featuring Carpenter and Quincannon in searching for mysteries and finally decided to give one a try. I was not impressed. I enjoy historical novels that are also mysteries but this one didn't seem to do either well. The story was OK but the dialogue seemed very stilted and this was enhanced by the rather stiff presentation by the reader. I did finish it but am not inclined to seek others in this series. This was my first Carpenter and Quincannon book, although I had seen them in the past while searching for mysteries. It wasn't bad but there was nothing special about it either. The story line was OK. One culprit was readily identified long before it was revealed in the book, while another was unexpected but without a good context for the reader to work from. The reading, particularly for Quincannon, was plodding. I doubt that I will attempt another book in this series. Quincannon is still wooden and predictable. As such he is the prototype for the thugs in suits that were Pinkertons in this era. The story is colorful, but not with any challenging mysteries, apt for the time and place but burdened by the male member of the team. The author's have a very successful team in McCone and Ripinsky, each contributes but both are fully presented as competent individuals. I actually liked the first 2 books better then this one. This one didnt hold my attention as well. I was glad to finally see that Sabina is finally giving John a chance. I think they need to get together. The one thing I dont like is that John & Sabina dont like Sherlock & dont believe he is the real thing. I hope in the next book that they get along & Sherlock has a bigger part. Looking forward to the next one... sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
