Marlee and Carter's story of how they fell in love and were willing to die for their love, but are spared by Prince Maxon. ( )

“I’d rather have my last memory be of his death than suffer knowing that his last memory was of mine.”

I loved this because the Woodworks were the characters in the series whose story I most wanted to understand more. I liked how we saw things from their perspective and it's like actually going through what they went through rather than just reading about it in the book and accepting it for what it was.

It showed that the characters do have their own lives and it isn't just focused on just Maxon and America.

This book was the whole selection series from the top except from America's best friend, Marlee Tames', point of view. Well actually it's not really from the beginning, it's from when Marlee meets a palace guard, Carter Woodwork. It all started when Marlee was locked up in her cell. She apologized to Maxon so many times for cheating on him and said that she was willing to accept her fate to die (not knowing that Maxon changed the penalty). Maxon told her that Carter was just going to take a beaten, but she refused and said that she'll take the beating for Carter. Maxon just laughed at her decision but decided that Marlee will be caned fifteen times and Carter will be whipped fifteen times. Honestly, that's pretty tough. After it all, Marlee and Carter still got married and Maxon even let them both to work in the palace after he and America got married.
I liked this book, and I mean it was great but in the whole selection, series that part when they get beaten? I couldn't handle it. I could envision it in my mind while reading it so clearly that it was so horrible to read it again (with more detail and from the perspective of the person actually getting canned). Although I did like how there was a whole new series about the girls who didn't make it to be the one. Ms. Chandler was the one who actually told me about these books, but probably because she knew how much I enjoyed reading The Selection. ( )

Did you ever read a story, get to the end and think "What a waste of time!" That's how I felt after reading this. It should have been released sooner, seemed as though it was an afterthought for Kiera Cass to rake in some extra royalties. It gave no new insight into the characters, didn't explain anything any better than just reading the Selection series and is truly not worth $2.99. Save your time and money, just read the Selection series. ( )

Makes me wish Marlee was the lead for this series instead of America.

A cute side story that helps explain what happened behind the scenes. Not necessary to read but a treat for Marlee and Carter fans. ( )
