A fun short with a lot of bird swapping that seals Stephen and Lucien together. ( )

Interlude with Tattoos takes place immediately after The Magpie Lord. I’ve read Magpie, even though I haven’t reviewed it yet, and this story seamlessly continues on after Stephen, Lord Crane and Merrick return to London. The first half is told in third person from Stephen’s pov, the second half is told from Crane’s pov although to me, it appeared as a distant third pov.



In this short glimpse into Stephen’s and Crane’s relationship after they return to London, we learn how Stephen is worried about Crane returning to China and how Stephen is trying to convince himself to accept it. Also how he’s going to have to tell the Council about what Crane is. We also find out about Merrick’s sincere worries about Crane’s involvement with Stephen because of Stephen’s dangerous power. Finally at the end, there are a few letters with Stephen and Crane’s correspondence about a particularly mischievous magpie tattoo which appears to have decided how their relationship is going to go.


I found this short story a fun read. In a way, it’s an epilogue to the first book. Too bad it was so short, but very enjoyable. I give this 4 Stars.
