Title: The Sign Painter Author: Davis Bunn Pages: 256 Year: 2014 Publisher: Howard Boy, how can I describe a story that defies description? Davis Bunn writes a tale that involves many themes such as homelessness, compassion, faith, judgment of others, and more. Inside the book we learn about a woman named Amy who is a single mom of a little girl since her husband died a couple of years prior. Due to her having no insurance, she lost her possessions and was driving around in a camper, working wherever she could find a job in order to provide the most basic of needs. Now, Amy finds herself at a local church with little pocket change and needing to feed herself and her daughter before she goes for a job interview. From this point on, the story will leave you breathless and captivated until the very end! The interactions among church members at one meeting seemed very real to me, and it broke my heart. The fight against gangs, drugs while trying to live in a peaceful community without the concern of children being used for drug carriers is like reading headlines from current newspapers. Overall, I think the tale is well-written, entertaining, as well as captivating. The fight against evil is shown to be both a spiritual one and a physical one. When I got near the end, I was surprised as I thought I had figured out who the antagonist was earlier in the pages. All I can say is this is a thought-provoking book. The everyday problems it presents and the Body of Christ’s response or perhaps lack thereof is something to really be considered by all. My rating is 5 stars. Amy Dowell has been a widow for two years. She has been homeless for nineteen months. She and her 5-year-old daughter, Kimmie, have been living in a camper cab built on top of her father’s old pickup truck. They have arrived in Brentonville, Florida, in the hopes of Amy finding a permanent job painting windows, putting her graphic design experience to work. She has a temporary job painting windows at a local car dealership but hopes to get the word out about her availability and skills so as to make Brentonville her new home. She and Kimmie go to a local church that has a program for homeless people, offering food and shelter. She is assigned an apartment to live in and is thrilled to have it.
Amy reports to work where the owner of the dealership is immediately smitten with her. She is not in the market for a relationship, especially with her boss. She politely rebuffs him and gets to work. As the day wanes, a group of five flashy dressed men and women arrive and buy three expensive cars, paying in cash. Amy notes these people but continues her work. After they leave and the dealership has closed, she notices a lot of money has been left on a salesman’s desk. What should she do? Her decision might decide her future.
This was a book that had been on my shelf for a while, so I decided to read it. I was not disappointed. The story was one of encouragement, hope and restoration. The plot was predictable but nonetheless enjoyable. I didn’t really click with the security force aspect of the story or any of the characters involved in it. I liked no-nonsense Lucy. She said what she thought and didn’t sugarcoat it, but her faith was evident in her life every day. For those who are looking for a relaxing, hopeful, and heart-warming book, this one is definitely for you.
