I see now why I was able to get it at the $1 store. ( )

3.5-4 stars. I quite enjoyed this collection of short stories. The subject matter (infidelity) sounds like it would make this incredibly depressing. The book cover, on the other hand, looks like a Parisian romance. The reality is somewhere in between. The author's writing style and way of weaving stories kept my interest. It wasn't always obvious where the story would end up, and I was quite impressed that the author managed to write 11 stories of infidelity that were all different. Reading this didn't depress me. It didn't make me more cynical. Even though these stories are all set in Paris, they could have taken place anywhere. France wasn't as big a backdrop as I expected it to be. I think my favorite aspect is that each story begins with a quote from an historical piece of French literature. I would try to guess what the story would be about based on these little clues. For example: "What greater pleasure than to cheat the cheater!" (Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695), The Cock and the Fox) is the quote that begins the story about a woman planning a revenge affair on her husband who she thinks is cheating. or "I do not wish to love anyone, for I have no faith in my faithfulness." (Louise de Vilmorin (1902-1969), Notebooks). I'm going to pass this book along for someone else to enjoy, but I would happily read it again. ( )

Enjoyable short stories, but sad. Not what I was expecting. ( )

Affairs, affairs, affairs. Beautiful couples with young children and affairs, mostly. All set in Paris, with a little revenge and a pinch of humour thrown in for spice. For some reason, I liked the repetition of this theme in every story and the almost lighthearted tone and the acceptance of the way things are. ( )

If you like your love stories sophisticated, cynical & more often funny than not - plus set in Paris, then this thin little volume is the book for you. ( )
