"The new thriller in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Isaac Bell series from grand master of adventure Clive Cussler. As Van Dorn private detective Isaac Bell strives to land a government contract to investigate John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil monopoly, the case takes a deadly turn. A sniper begins murdering opponents of Standard Oil, and soon the assassin-shooting with extraordinary accuracy at seemingly impossible long range-kills Bell's best witness, a brave and likable man. Then the shooter detonates a terrible explosion that sets the victim's independent refinery ablaze. Bell summons his best detectives to scour the site of the crime for evidence. Who is the assassin and for whom did he kill? But the murders-shootings, poisonings, staged accidents-have just begun as Bell tracks his phantom-like criminal adversary from the "oil fever" regions of Kansas and Texas to Washington, D.C., to the tycoons' enclave of New York, to Russia's war-torn Baku oil fields on the Caspian Sea, and back to America for a final, desperate confrontation. And this one will be the most explosive of all"--… (más)

And enjoyable read, but the co-authors 'effort to conceal the gender of the assassin gave away the assassin's identity almost from the beginning of the book. ( )

This is the first Isaac Bell book I've read. I loved it, which is surprising because I don't like historical fiction. The author doesn't drag you down with describing things at that time, which I like. This book jumps right into the story and you follow along with figuring out the mysteries with tons of action scenes. If the rest of his Isaac Bell books is like this one, I'm sure I'll love them all. I've put them on my list to read.

The story sucked me in and I finished it fast. I really loved the reveal at the end. I didn't guess it and usually I'm good at that. This book was easy to follow with the characters, haven't read any of the previous books.

Overall I am pleased with the book and would recommend it to others to read.

I won this book in a giveaway. ( )

The 8th Issac Bell novel (I've not read them all) has our intrepid private detective agent seemingly discovering teleportation. Not only does he cover vast swaths of the country by steam train in seemingly no time at all, but also by boat to the Middle East and Russia all in a sequence of events that would make Jack Bauer seem like a laggard. If you could ignore such things in the TV version of A Game of Thrones, then you'll probably give it a pass here too.

Otherwise, the novel is entertaining enough. An aged Rockefeller is flexing his formidable muscle in an attempt to gain a stranglehold on the growing gasoline industry, and those squashed in his wake have an axe to grind. Bell finds himself guarding the tycoon against an attempt to bring down his empire. The identity of the assassin was somewhat of an unexpected surprise.

This is my first Clive Cussler book and I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. Lots of great action. If you love action adventure novels, give this one a try. ( )
