Road trip audiobook. This one got split up over two road trips a month apart, but I slipped back into it quite smoothly.

Poehler is a funny woman, and it was quite pleasant to pass the miles listening to her talk about her life, SNL, Parks and Recreation, and whatever other random topics occurred to her. Just what I want in a traveling companion. ( )

Reminded me a lot of Bossypants by Tina Fey, didn’t enjoy that much either. As a memoir it didn’t have much meat to it, as a funny book there was no humour to be found for me, and as an “advice book” there were few pearls of wisdom at all. It didn’t make me feel any differently to Amy Poehler than before I read it, and I think that is a bit of a failure for such a book. It was all in all rather boring. ( )

I thought that due to the sectioned-up nature of this book I would read it a bit at a time around other commitments.

Instead, I was compelled to consume it in one go, because Poehler's chatty writing style echoes her speaking voice and is super readable. I kept thinking of Fran Drescher's autobiography [b:Enter Whining|489109|Enter Whining|Fran Drescher|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1387708436s/489109.jpg|2493755], which is similarly honest, straightforward, and open. I've reread Drescher's books many times and hope to reread Yes Please just as many. It's the kind of book that gives you a kick in the butt while simultaneously lifting you up and giving you a hug. I read this during an inpatient hospitalization and it’s a miracle I was allowed to be discharged after the fact. This book is so deeply unfunny. Anything having to do with pregnancy, motherhood, family, etc is a MAJOR hell fucking no for me, but to be fair my only other option than reading this was quite literally staring at a wall, so.. Also, her having to write a whole chapter about how she took accountability for offending a viewer with one of her bits and then including the apology letter and other correspondences in the book was…. a choice. ☺️ ( )

This was a quick read and enjoyable if you like Amy Poehler and followed her career. She seems pretty normal and likeable and this was a fine way to pass a few hours of my life.

Nothing to see here if you aren't already a fan. ( )

This book is heavy. Perhaps that's because it's so firmly packed with wit and insight. Fans of Poehler and her offbeat characters expect her to be outrageous and there's some of that here, but mostly this is a sweet, funny memoir and a thoughtful look at what it takes to be a woman. In fact, there's lots of advice given here, and it's smart, the kind of stuff your favorite aunt would tell you, albeit, an aunt who once shot a moose on the "Weekend Update" set while rapping alongside Sarah Palin. She addresses how to treat your career (like a bad boyfriend); how not to torture other women about their life choices; ways to shut people up about your newly single status ("Hey, lady, I don't want to fuck your husband"). With so much to enjoy and absorb, you may even want to carry this book around, reread it, and underline pertinent-to-your-own-life sentences, which would be perfectly reasonable, except for the fact that it's so darn heavy.

Quick note here: Everybody wants you to share your MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT all the time, and I'm here to tell you that you don't have to. You don't have to tell it or tweet it or Instagram it. You don't have to put it in a book or share it with anyone who doesn't feel safe and protective of your heart.
