The book opens with a prophecy: a river of blood will flow and afterwards, there will be 20 years of peace. We are taken to the waters along which the Sorcerer grew up and where he, after being deposed in the Capital, now returns to bring to reality the prophecy. Vicious, self-obsessed to an unimaginable degree, he appropriates loyalties that cannot be revoked, as he did in the former days. He is a master of cruelty, of deceit, and he spares no one, not even the Dead Woman (a reference to Eva Peron). Especially the Dead Woman, for he, at the right time, must become the reverence of her faithful. The townspeople living along the riverside are made to build a pyramid of mirrors on which his image can multiply to infinity. And inside that pyramid, a dazzling white cocoon from which he will emerge, transformed into the eternal I, motherfatherson.

The Lizard’s Tail is a fictional biography of Jose Lopez Rega, Minister of Social Welfare during the Peronist government (from Juan Peron’s government, and continued by his third wife and vice-president, Isabel Peron), who was known to engage in occultism and the dark arts, earning him the name El Brujo. Rega was Isabel Peron’s Rasputin, acting as de facto prime minister, ruling Argentina with policies and decisions that were dictated by sorcery and witchcraft. During his rule, he organized the Argentine Anti-Communist Alliance (Triple A), a terrorist group responsible for the deaths of 1,500 persons and the exile of hundreds more. It was this group which was responsible for the Ezeiza massacre in June 1973, which began the “Dirty War” that over the next years would claim up to 30,000 deaths and disappeared. The lizard’s tail refers to the whip that torturers use.

Dark, unrelentingly ominous, every line oozing with the macabre, every page screaming malevolence that’s all the more disturbing being based on the lives of real persons and on real events that took place in a real country -- this was not an enjoyable read in the usual sense. But Valenzuela, like her character is a shaman, whose writing weaves the reader into a spell, allowing entrance to the delirious world of a power-mad sorcerer, that finds no release until the spectacular end. Cuando Juan Peron volvió a la presidencia de Argentina por última vez en 1974, trajo a dos socios que tendrian un impacto importante en el pais. La primera era su tercera esposa Isabela, que ascendería a la presidencia después de la muerte del marido. El segundo era Jose López Rega, un personaje tan raro que parece difícil creer que no fue inventado por Borges o Arlt. Rega estaba fascinado con misticismo y artes ocultos, incluyendo umbanda (parecido a santeria o vudú) y astrología. Sus intereses le ganaron el apodo de El Brujo, un titutlo muy apropiado considerando su influencia (estilo Rasputin) sobre Peron e Isabela. Cola de lagartija es basada libremente en el personaje de López Rega, separándose de los hechos históricos de López Rega para crear una meditación surrealista y deslumbrante sobre la violencia y el poder. Después del golpe que termina el gobierno de Isabela, El Brujo se dirige a Laguna Negra, donde fue criado, en el norte de Argentina con sus seguidores. Aquí organiza nuevos ritos de sangre y sacrificio, y efectúa una orgía muy torcida a la cual invita a miembros prominentes de la sociedad argentina.

Aunque esta en exilio interno, El Brujo es suficiente peligroso para inspirar enemigos, entre ellos los militares en poder, un revolucionario, y un autor que trabaja en una biografía del Brujo. El revolucionario y el autor tienen una breve relación, durante la cual el revolucionario pide que el autor acabe su libro matando al Brujo. ¿Pero puede ella escribir un fin que matará el original?

El Brujo encuentra un nuevo enemigo en el alcalde del pueblo de Capivari y su pequeño periódico. Él asume control de la ciudad y el periódico, cambiando el énfasis de este último a los temas ocultos. Esto inspira en él planes para un nuevo rito, una concepción inmaculado que limpiara Argentina en un río de la sangre.

Cuando comencé este libro, contaba con un elemento de lo extraño, quizás incluso el realismo mágico, como puedo ser esperado de una historia basada en un individuo tan extraño. Pero la historia es surrealista, a menudo espantosa o divertida, presentando una mirada exagerada a la relación entre la política y la violencia, y los limites del periodista o el escritor para responder a lo terrible.
