I really loved this wordless picture book! I really liked that the book is interactive and there were flaps in the book that could be lifted and created a cool effect of moving pictures. The book follows the adventure of Flora and a beautiful little penguin that are skating on ice.I love that the characters and the storyline explore a variety of emotions and feelings. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and bright. They are also very detailed which allows for the reader to read the faces and expressions of the characters to form interpretations. I really like the freedom that comes with the wordless picture book since there is guidance within the book but, it really is all left to the reader's interpretation and perspective. The illustrations are beautifully made and really give the illusion of the two characters ice skating. The story is a nice story of friendship and working together. I really liked this book. It was very lighthearted and a bit humorous. ( )

The pictures in this book are really nice. This was one of the wordless picture books that I found in class. It was really cute and appropriate for students in the K-2 grades. The main reason I disliked this book was because for me, personally, it was difficult to follow the storyline. Having a book that lacks words makes it difficult to figure out where the story is going and what is really taking place, as far as the interactions the characters may experience with other characters or things in the text. However, I tend to like wordless picture books just because of the space and opportunity it allows readers to kind of use their creative minds and imagination to infer what might happen, or to predict and make conclusions just by using text clues and pictures. I feel that this book did not allow me to do that, which felt a little disappointing. However, I still really loved the pictures and thought that young students with wild imaginations can still come up with their own meanings behind this story. It was just a little difficult for me personally. ( )

I did not really enjoy this book because I found no meaning or lesson behind it. The story line wasn't even an interesting one. The book was a picture book about a kid ice skating with a penguin and then getting mad at him and then playing with him again towards the end. I did not think it was that easy to follow because Im not sure how I would be able to explain his book to a child. A good part about this book was the cute and colorful pictures of the child smiling and playing because the pictures are still captivating for a child to enjoy. Yes within the storyline the penguin and child have to come together to solve a problem, I still think the pictures could have been explained differently. Personally would not recommend the book. Overall great illustrations but hard to develop the plot or theme. ( )

I am not a huge fan of wordless picture books, but I liked Flora and the Penguin. With some wordless picture book, it can be difficult to really understand what the story is, but in Flora and the Penguin I could easily understand what was going on and I think a lot of kids would be able to as well. The book was interactive with some pages having pictures under flaps, which is fun and engaging. One of the things that I like most about this book is that you can make up your own dialogue and ideas of what Molly may be thinking and saying. ( )

I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I liked this book because I enjoyed how there was a friendship built between the penguin and Flora which was shown through her assisting him to find food. I also enjoyed the facial expressions of Flora because it gave away her feelings without having to use words to explain. Children cannot lie through their facial expressions and reactions so I enjoyed the believability of the character. I liked how the plot progressed and how the story developed to include multiple experiences the two characters shared together. There were many emotions that were shown by the girl and the penguin mirrored her emotions through his physical responses. But I did not like how the book was all the same color scheme because I found myself becoming more disinterested as the book went on. The book could push young readers to think about how they could feel if they were able to play with a penguin on a snow day and how they could feel when they realized he disappeared. I would say the big idea for the book is that a person is able to find friendship in anyone if they work at it and that there are many experiences that can bond people. ( )
