I thought this was adorable and hilarious. I don't think my kiddos got it, though... :/ ( )

A Piece of Cake by LeUyen Pham tells the tale of Mouse, who made a birthday cake for his clever friend, Bird. On his way to deliver it, other animals ask him to trade a piece of the cake for something they have. Since Mouse is so kind- he can't say no to any of the trades, even though he doesn't think Bird will want any of the items. Will Bird be upset when Mouse shows up at his door?

What makes this book so great is that it seems predictable, but it isn't. You think you know what every animal is going to trade for a piece of cake, but you don't. Kids will have a blast looking at the pictures and trying to figure out what was going to happen next.

The vibrant illustrations and Mouse's facial expressions make this a book that will be fun to read over and over again. The predictable parts allow for a younger kid or sibling to chime in. ( )

The mouse was made a cake for little birds birthday. But along the way he traded a piece of cake for different types of things that different animals had given mouse for the piece of cake. When mouse got to little birds house, they were going back to mouse's house to make another one. Along the way back home, they run into the animals that mouse had traded a piece of cake and they were having some type of trouble. So little bird made a trade with them. Once they got all of the ingredients to make another cake and all the animals were invited. Books show that it is good to help out and trade things with people because they might need it in the long run. ( )

In the story, A Piece of Cake, Mouse decided to bake a cake for Little Bird's birthday. Mouse had to used up everything in his pantry to make the cake. After he was done baking the cake, he went to the Little Bird's house. Along the way, Mouse made new friends on his way to Little Bird's house. However, each friend wanted a piece of cake and offered Mouse something in return. Mouse was too kind to say no, so he accepted all the trades. When he arrived at Little Bird's house, he had no more cake. Instead Mouse had a cork, wire, fly swatter, and net. Mouse felt bad for not giving the cake to Little Bird and that he had nothing left at home to make another cake. Little Bird was not upset, instead found ways to use them. Little Bird ended up trading all the presents that Mouse traded for on the way back to Mouse's house. Along the way, each friend was having troubles and Little Bird offered to trade his presents for an ingredient for cake. After Mouse and Little Bird traded all the presents back for ingredients, they made a new cake and invited all the friends they made along the way to Little Bird's birthday party. ( )
