The story in ROCKET MAN is nicely balanced. As much as he can, Bob survives his interactions with the bullying Roy within the rules of male culture, alternating between ignoring Roy's taunts and responding assertively, even aggressively. Yet Bob also acknowledges his worries about his father, showing emotional sensitivity and introspection. Importantly, we see Bob demonstrating that he can do something with his feelings rather than just worry helplessly; in this aspect, he's a brave, observant character. That said, keep in mind that this is a novel for children, not a YA treatment. The ending is unexpectedly sweet, and the escalating problems with Roy are resolved far too simply to be plausible.
