There isn't really a "go to" book on Scripture. Sure, there are plenty of theological books on Scripture, and lots of popular-level works on how to read Scripture, and more and more books on the whole story line of Scripture. One of my pet peeves is when a book is admittedly "introductory" or "beginner" and the author uses that as an excuse for bad arguments - such is the case here. About 3/4 of this book is perfectly fine, introductory level explanation of the conservative Protestant view of Scripture. However, the argument for inerrancy is packed with all kinds of questionable assumptions. The "Jesus's View of Scripture" section is rife with arguments from silence and psychological counterfactuals. I agree with the conclusions, but the arguments are just inexcusably paltry! The well annotated bibliography at the end is what redeems this book from a 2/5 to a 3/5. ( )

Ultimately we can believe the Bible because we believe in the power and wisdom and goodness and truthfulness of the God whose authority and veracity cannot be separated from the Bible. We trust the Bible because it is God's Bible. And God being Go, we have every reason to take him at his word.
