E' il 1937 quando Lisette giunge a Roussillon, un villaggio della Provenza appollaiato in cima a una montagna. Vent'anni, e nel cuore la speranza di un apprendistato alla galleria d'arte Laforgue di Parigi, André, il marito, ha deciso di abbandonare la capitale e trasferirsi in quel borgo sperduto perché il nonno, Pascal, gli ha chiesto aiuto a causa della sua cagionevole salute. André ha rinunciato al prestigioso ruolo di funzionario nella Corporazione degli Encadreurs, l'associazione dei corniciai parigini, e Lisette al suo anelito d'arte. A Roussillon, però, i due non si imbattono affatto in un anziano malandato e in fin di vita, ma in un aitante ottantenne in evidente buona salute. Ma nel chiuso della sua casa, Pascal mostra a Lisette e André la ragione vera del loro arrivo a Roussillon: sette quadri che lasciano Lisette a bocca aperta.

Lisette liebt die Kunst und fühlt sich daher in Paris sehr wohl. Doch als der Großvater ihres Mannes André erkrankt, folgt sie ihrem Mann in die Provinz nach Roussillon. Es fällt ihr zunächst nicht leicht, sich dort einzuleben, doch Pascal hat eine Gemäldesammlung, die ihr Interesse weckt. Als Pascal stirbt, versteckt André die Gemälde, damit sie den Nazis nicht in die Hände fallen. Doch dann kehrt ihr Mann nicht aus dem Krieg zurück und Lisette macht sich auf die Suche nach den Bildern.
Dies ist mein erstes Buch der Autorin Susen Vreeland. Der Schreibstil ist sehr detailliert und ich brauchte ein Weilchen um mich einzulesen. Das sorgt aber auch dafür, dass man die Bilder der Landschaft direkt vor Augen hat. Aber auch die Personen sind gut und lebendig dargestellt.
Lisette ist eine sympathische Person, die in einem Waisenhaus in Paris aufgewachsen ist. Schon dort erachte ihr Interesse an der Kunst erwacht. Dass sie als Städterin Probleme hatte, sich in das dörfliche Leben einzufinden, kann ich nachvollziehen. Begierig saugt sie die Informationen von Pascal über die Bilder aus seiner Sammlung in sich auf. Obwohl sie dann in Roussillon eine Heimat gefunden hat, zieht es sie auch wieder nach Paris. Man spürt diese Zerrissenheit in Ihr.
Man erfährt sehr viel über die Malerei und einige bekannte Namen tauchen in diesem Buch auch auf.
Es ist ein ruhiger Roman, der mir gut gefallen hat. ( )

Lisette and her husband Andre leave Paris in 1937 and go to the (real) village of Roussillon in Provence to care for his aging grandfather, Pascal. Lisette is at first frustrated, because she hoped to work as an art museum curator in Paris, but she learns that Pascal met the artists Cezanne and Pissarro (through his work in the ochre mines, as a pigment salesman, and as a frame maker), and has some of their paintings, as well as a possible Picasso. When Andre enlists to fight in World War II, he hides the paintings. Much of the book is about what Lisette does to get through the war, and her quest to find the paintings afterward. She meets Mark and Bella Chagall, and is gifted with one of his paintings as well. The story moves slowly, but Vreeland does a wonderful job describing the Provençal countryside and way of life. The audiobook is read by Kim Bubbs, who does a wonderful job with all the French words in the book. The afterword identifies which paintings are real and which are not. ( )

The author mocks foie gras, making the French as accepting of extreme cruelty to animals as the Spanish with their godawful bullfights.

The tone is shallow, enhanced by Vreeland giving her pet chicken to be killed for no real reason.

Plot lags along, improbable and convoluted. ( )

I had such a difficult time getting through this book that I found myself skimming whole sections just to get to the end. I've loved this author's previous books, so I'm not sure why I couldn't get in to the rhythm of this one.
Just not for me, but I'm sure other readers will have more interest in the subject matter and enjoy it. ( )
