Almaz is strong-willed young girl that wants to be a better beekeeper than the rest of the men in her village. Almaz was mocked for being too scared to climb the tree. Almaz created a different hive that can stay on the ground. Almaz became the best beekeeper in her village. Almaz is a symbol of woman power and of ingenuity. The illustrations are gorgeous. This book uses figurative language in several places, ". . . like a string of golden diamonds . . . " and "Just like a worker bee . . . " The book does a good job of sharing the culture of Ethiopia, including Amharic Language and describing important components like the market and the priests. Also, it has clear story elements of problem, rising action, climax, falling action and solution. I loved the Mighty Girl message in the book as well. This book would be best for intermediate students. The Best Beekeeper of Lalibela: A Tale from Africa by Cristina Kessler is a great piece of traditional literature to teach about other cultures. In Ethiopia, a girl named, Almaz is determined to be the best keeper and make the sweetest honey. She is teased by the men in the community because beekeeping is not for girls. Almaz works endlessly to prove them wrong. With a little encouragement she shows everyone that girls can do anything just as good as men. This would be a great book to use as a read-aloud in grades as young as Pre-K to 6th. This book has many issues that could be addressed differently with each class. One main issue is gender equity. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
