This biography of the visionary musician Sun Ra is as bright and colorful as he was in real life. It shows how he never really fit in on earth, believing he was from Saturn, and looked at everything from his own unique perspective. Though Sun Ra's music is consider quite "out there", the author notes that he did master the classics before he really began his cosmic journey. Please put on a Sun Ra recording while reading this to a little one. ( )

Stellar fluid imagery and a just-right, slant-telling of the life of Herman "Sonny" Blount, Sun Ra, musician and impresario extraordinaire. ( )

The Cosmo-Biography of Sun Ra is a true story about a boy who recognized that he was different even to the point of claiming he was from Saturn. He was very interested in the world around him, especially music. His dedication and passion for music allowed him to master many genres, and he even created his own sound. He wasn’t afraid to be himself and stayed true to who he was. Sun Ra travelled all around sharing his music to the world until his apparent return back to Saturn. The vibrant colors in the book attract the attention of the reader. I love Sun Ra’s at the end of the book, “You may think that it is gravity that holds us all together but it is not- it is music.” I wish the book had explained more about the type of music that Sun Ra made; however, this is a unique, captivating story with an extraterrestrial theme accompanied with intriguing illustrations as well. Sun Ra always knew he was different from others (he even claimed to be from Saturn). Although he was eccentric he found a home in his music. The story itself was well told, informative, and fun. The illustrations are beautiful and full of life. As soon as I finished I ordered a Sun Ra album on vinyl and cannot wait to get it in. ( )
