The book was great, but what makes it a win for me is the illustrations. They are so different in a great way. The illustrator provided textures in his drawings making the pictures come to life. The poetry in this book is ingenious, bright, and witty. This book is a great one to have at home and in a classroom to start introducing kids to the realities of math. ( )

This book suprised me. I expected the poems to be more math related, however, some poems are brilliant. There are poems that question the reader and there are poems that use mathematical terms. Each poem has a hidden math agenda. There are poems that cover addition, multiplication, subtraction, and etc.

This will be good to use at least one of these poems in the book as a closing to teaching multiplication or etc. The students can answer the questions that some of the poems ask or with the other poems the children can use them to help remember what they learned. I really enjoyed reading this book. Additionally, the children can also use the illustrations to answer the questions in some of the poems. This book is honestly an interactive read and I think using it in the math curriculum will be brilliant. ( )

This is a collection of poems all with math or numbers as a theme. Ranging from views of math as frustrating, to being safe and unchanging, to finding math in nature and in all the aspects of our daily life. There is something for everyone in this collection. Bright colors in the illustration add excitement and emotion to a topic that may not be so exciting for many.

I first heard a few of these poems at a school ad part of an OMA dance performance. Even then, hearing just the poems was powerful. The illustrations add to the relate-able messages about math. I would love to present these poems during a math lesson and add an extra layer of meaning and thinking to what they learn.

"Marvelous Math" was a great combination of English Language Arts and Mathematics. This book was a compilation of poems all on the subject of math. The poems contained alliteration, repetition, and rhymes. I really enjoyed the concrete poems with their unique shapes among the beautiful stylized illustration. The poems posed good questions students have about math as well as showing good examples of how math is present everywhere in our everyday lives. Opinions on math were expressed, both good and bad, and one of the poems even showed counting in Cantonese. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the illustrations aided the poems beautifully. ( )

Curated by Lee Bennett Hopkins, this collection of poems illustrates math's wondrous and infinite scope: the numbers that make up our birthdays and addresses, size, speed, time, and distance. The juxtaposition of the fluidity of poetry and the fixedness of mathematics is seamless. My favorite poem, "Pythagoras" by Madeleine Comora, is the perfect example: "Pythagoras said: All things are numbers. The universe counted and measured even or odd, forms rhythmic patterns of motion and harmony like the beating wings of birds." This collection does a fair job of highlighting the importance of math, but it does not teach specific concepts. I think I would be most likely to use this book in an ELA lesson, rather than a math lesson. ( )
